NBA Trade Rumors: Will the Los Angeles Lakers Make a Move?

Joshua CarrollFeb 23, 2012

As we near the trade deadline, March 15, many Laker fans are on the edge of their seats wondering if the Lakers will make a move.

Winners of five of their last six, it looks like LA is finally starting to find its groove. But does the aging team have the personnel to compete for a title this season?

I do know this: The combination of Gasol and Bynum in the post is scary no matter which way you look at it, and although Gasol is the Lakers' most enticing trade piece, being able to make a move but keep both Gasol and Bynum would be most beneficial for them.

However, LA won't get that game-changing player fans are hoping for without trading Pau. What they could do was trade away the first-round draft pick they received for Lamar Odom for an upgrade at the point guard position.

Recently, the Lakers have reportedly (the latest news via Sam Amico) had their eyes on Ramon Sessions, the solid point guard playing behind rookie sensation Kyrie Irving in Cleveland.

Laker fans won't exactly jump off their seats if LA is able to make this trade, but they should, and here's why: Sessions is one of the most underrated point guards in the league.

He showed just how good he still is during Irving's absence, posting an impressive double-double in a victory over the Clippers. He is a quick guard with the ability to defend some of the younger guards in the league, unlike Derek Fisher.

The bottom line is, he's an upgrade, and that's all you could really ask for at this point as a Laker fan.

There have been talks of bringing in the Timberwolves' Michael Beasley and/or Derrick Williams. However, it is extremely unlikely that the Lakers would be able to make this trade and retain Gasol.

People are so willing and ready to ship Gasol out of LA, but don't realize just how hard it would be to find another big man to compliment Bynum so well in the post.

Something that you rarely hear discussed is as follows. The Lakers could simply keep the team intact for the remainder of the season and rebuild this summer. Yes, Kobe is getting old and wants to win right now, but he must realize that there might not be a trade available right now that can instantaneously greatly improve their championship chances.

Like I stated before, the Lakers have a first-round draft pick up their sleeve that they could use to select a young point guard of the future. Kobe might not like it, but the truth of the matter is, I'd say he has a solid two to four years left in him. The Lakers must start to think about the future before they are left with nothing when he leaves.

I know Laker fans are used to losing, but in reality, the West is wide open and the Lakers could still manage to reach the Western Conference Finals. They are experienced and they still have Kobe Bryant, one of the most competitive players to ever play the game.

As they prepare to match up against a real contender tonight, the Oklahoma City Thunder, I believe the Lakers will use this as a gauge and configure just how realistic their championship odds are with their current roster.

Will the Lakers make a move? Should the Lakers move? So many questions to be answered, yet so little time.
