NBA Trade Rumors: Why Chicago Bulls Must Swap Carlos Boozer for Pau Gasol
While the Chicago Bulls' clear weakness the past two seasons has been shooting guard, Carlos Boozer has seen his fair share of blame, particularly in the playoffs last season.
That's why landing Pau Gasol and getting rid of Boozer would point the Bulls to their first title since 1998.
Marca.com reported on Sunday that Derrick Rose gave the Bulls clearance to pursue Gasol and that the Bulls are willing to offer Boozer and another player for the 31-year-old Spaniard. SheridanHoops.com confirmed the rumor shortly thereafter.
Boozer can still shoot, that much is clear. He's shooting 53 percent from the floor this season. He's also a good rebounder, averaging 8.4 boards per game. However, Boozer has always been criticized for his defense and lack of shot-blocking. As a power forward, those are two weaknesses that can be seriously exposed in the interior.
Gasol is not only a better offensive player, rebounder and passer than Boozer, he's also a better defender and shot-blocker. There was a case to be made that Gasol deserved to make the All-Star Game this season, as he has averaged 16.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.
On top of all of this, Boozer is injury prone, which is even more concerning given the compact schedule this season. He's had four seasons in which he's played fewer than 60 games. He played 59 games last season.
It's no wonder Rose is excited about the prospect of landing Gasol. It won't resolve the Bulls' issues at shooting guard, but it could still land them a championship.
