WWE: Zack Ryder's Z! True Long Island Story Turns One; Are You Serious, Bro?
On the one-year anniversary of Zack Ryder's Z! True Long Island Story premiere on YouTube, it seems only fitting to crack open a Bud Light Lime, put on a pair of Broski sunglasses and take a look back at all 53 episodes.
If you don't have time for that, allow me to recap some of the all-time great moments in the life of the Long Island Loudmouth.
Playing with Toys
1 of 7Zack is an avid collector of WWE merchandise, including action figures. On several occasions, the toys get in on the act.
- In the pilot episode, Zack hits an absolutely devastating Rough Ryder and gets a clean victory over The Great One. Probably a better match than Rock-Cena will end up being.
- After dressing up as the Ultimate Broski in episode 5, Zack fell victim to a thunderous Warrior Splash in episode 23. I have a sneaking suspicion that the original Warrior died and was replaced by an impostor in this clip.
- Furious about being attacked at WrestleMania 27 by Roddy Piper, Ryder gained a measure of revenge in episode 8, repeatedly smashing a coconut over the Rowdy Scot's plastic likeness.
- In an exclusive interview with Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Ryder asks the hard-hitting questions like, "Where do you see Zack Ryder's career going in the near future?" to which the space ranger replied prophetically, "To infinity and beyond!"
- Despite being put out of action with a serious back injury, Ryder pre-taped a Royal Rumble segment that saw him take out stuffed avatars for several WWE icons like "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, "Macho Man" Randy Savage and his arch-rival, The Ultimate Warrior. After a Broski Boot and a Rough Ryder to the immortal Hulk Hogan's stuffed head, Ryder stood in the ring victorious.
Pop Culture Shout-Outs
2 of 7One of the great things about Zack Ryder is his ability to get over as a total nerd. A huge Star Wars fan who plays with toys and makes regular references to classic movies and television shows, he is very easy to relate to among fans in their 20s and 30s.
- When asked to "shoot" on WWE in episode 4, Ryder dressed up as everyone's favorite rogue, Han Sol-bro. It's no wonder that he ended up in a relationship with the out-of-this-world hotness that is Princess Leia just six episodes later.
- In episode 17, Ryder enlisted the help of his meat-headed Long Island compatriot known only as "Big O" to get back the eye of the tiger. Cue the raw eggs, animal chasing and mildly homoerotic beach runs, and Ryder put together a perfect shout-out to America's most recognizable underdog.
- In episode 44, Zack warned best friend Chiappetta to "go easy on the Pepsi!" After all, as we discovered in episode 32's ZTV Cribs, Chiappetta sleeps right where Z!TLIS is filmed. In the next episode, unable to make his own hotel reservation, Zack utilized the Talkboy tape recorder made famous by young Kevin McAllister and scored his own suite. Finally, in episode 47, Zack shouted confidently to Kane, "I'm not afraid anymore! Do you hear me? I said I'm not afraid anymore!" before Chiappetta sneaked up behind him with a Kane mask and sent him screaming for the hills.
That's Not PG!
3 of 7Sadly, with Z!TLIS moving to the WWE's YouTube page, chances are the show will feature fewer spots like these ones, which push beyond the limits of what's acceptable in the WWE Universe.
- In episode 11, as Zack was picking up his dad for a trip to the gym, he walked in on his old man in a compromising and embarrassing position...using a Shake Weight while watching videos of his favorite...ahem...performer.
- In episode 22, an unfortunate camera angle caught Scott Stanford capturing the quick response smart phone code on Zack Ryder's trunks.
- After Ryder tried unsuccessfully to score Eve's digits in episode 42, the WWE's resident grenade tried to get herself a piece of the Internet Champion. The last time Mae Young got fist pumped, things got a little messy.
- A few short weeks later, an exuberant United States champion pointed out that he did something he never thought he'd do. He "pounded" Eve on RAW. Sadly, a simple fist bump is as close as he ever got before Eve leaped out of an ambulance last Monday on RAW and into the arms of John Cena.
Are You Sirius Bro Satellite Radio
4 of 7In episode 16, Zach Ryder proclaimed himself "The King of all Social Media," and debuted Are You Sirius Bro Satellite Radio, complete with every Broski's favorite fist pumping jams. In episode 33, AYSB made a return with even more classic tunes like:
"Not Afraid": I'm not afraid (I'm not afraid) to get real tan (get real tan). Everybody (everybody), knows I'm the man (knows I'm the man).
"Party in the L-I": I pop my collar up, they're playin' my song. Look at my sick tri. Woo woo woo, you know it. It's a party in the L-I.
"Tweet It": Tweet it! Tweet it! I used to always be defeated. All the girls love me 'cause I'm a hot guy. I'm the head Broski from the L-I. Just tweet it.
"Broski From the Block": Don't be fooled by the merch that I got. I'm still, I'm still Broski from the block. I used to not be on RAW, now I'm on a lot!
Partnership for a Woo Woo Woo America
5 of 7Since episode 5, Zack Ryder has aired a series of ads sponsored by the Partnership for a Woo Woo Woo America. The ads feature literal interpretations of common idioms, and entreat the WWE to do the right thing.
- This is the WWE. This is a ball with Zack Ryder. This is the WWE dropping the ball with Zack Ryder.
- This is the WWE. This is putting Zack Ryder on television. This is the WWE having cold feet about putting Zack Ryder on television.
- This is the WWE. This is the back burner. This is WWE putting Zack Ryder on the back burner.
In-Jokes for Smarks and the IWC
6 of 7Every now and then, Zack will make a seemingly innocuous comment that smart marks and wrestling insiders recognize as wrestling jargon.
- In episode 4, during his time on Superstars, and in the midst of an extended losing streak, Ryder pointed out, "I have figured out why the unemployment rate in the United States is so high. Because Zack Ryder's doing all the jobs!"
- After being shoved by his friend Big O in episode 8 for not naming him Broski of the Week, Ryder shouted indignantly, "Are you serious, bro?! Nobody pushes Zack Ryder! Zack Ryder does not get pushed!"
- When asked what he was doing as he attempted to scale a fence in episode 9, Ryder announced that he was, "trying to get over!" It took quite a few more episodes, but eventually Ryder found himself more over than any Superstar in recent memory.
- Ryder, always mindful of the Zack Pack and their role in making his show so popular, reasoned in episode 13 that Z!TLIS had reached over a million views because "all the Marks love [him]." Like Mark Zuckerberg, Mark Henry, Mark Anthony, Mark Hamill and Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
Take Care...
7 of 7I could go on forever. From Mr. Ryder's unhealthy obsession with John Morrison and Melina to some of Dolph Ziggler's best #heel promo work, Z! True Long Island Story is one of the best ideas WWE never had.
The Long Island Loudmouth has been one of the most entertaining Superstars in the entire company over the last year, and despite his recent string of bad luck, I expect everyone's favorite Broski to come back more jacked, tan and over than ever.
WWE has gone out of its way to kill Ryder's momentum, but he's shown them the error of their ways before. I can't wait to watch him do it again. Woo Woo Woo...You know it!
