Jeremy Lin: Most Intriguing Twitter Reactions to Linsanity Sweeping the Nation

Josh MartinJun 7, 2018

You've probably heard a thing or two about Jeremy Lin by now, if only because he's given hope to the haplessly dysfunctional New York Knicks and excited every guy in the media capital of America with a pen in the process.

But what, exactly, is Linsanity? Or, really, any condition into which the name "Lin" can be conveniently substituted in pun form?

Perhaps the most entertaining (if not the best) way to understand the NBA's latest fly-by-night phenomenon is through the wonderful world of Twitter.

You know, that wonderful bit of technology that allows anyone with an internet connection and 140 characters worth of Socratic wisdom to divulge their deepest, darkest, most ridiculous thoughts to millions of people around the world, 99 percent of which they'll ultimately regret.

Hmmm...I wonder what the Twitter machine has to say about a Taiwanese-American Harvard grad who went from couch surfer to superstar and hipster fan favorite all in one fell swoop.

And please, don't excuse the liberal use of Lin-related puns.

Certifiably Linsane

No NBA player has taken as enthusiastic an interest in Jeremy Lin's explosion onto the national scene than Metta World Peace.

How perfect, right? The league's craziest player getting himself wrapped up in the league's craziest phenomenon. A guy who actually is insane going Linsane. A native New Yorker (Queensbridge!) getting excited about his hometown Knickerbockers.

The Basketball Player Formerly Known as Ron Artest need only consult his much-celebrated psychiatrist for a quick re-diagnosis to make that one stand up on record.

MWP was kind enough to share his thoughts on Lin last night, in between sorting out his favorite singers of all time. The deadweight dud for the Los Angeles Lakers was kind enough to offer some career advice to Lin, first on footwear:

Then, after taking on the role of Lin's hypothetical manager, World Peace offered his thoughts on Lin's marketability as an endorser of high-end products, including sailboats...

Allen Iverson-related athletic apparel...

And, errr, press conferences:

Then, Mr. World Peace really went off his rocker with strangely effusive praise for Lin, comparing him to sliced bread...

And Jerry West...

While sharing his thoughts about Lin's place in the point guard hierarchy...

And announcing that he'd be throwing a party in Lin's honor:

Shao-Lin Shadow Boxing

Lest you think World Peace is the only delusional pro athlete who's weighed in on Linsanity, allow me to introduce the musings of one Mr. Floyd Mayweather Jr., who pulled a Luis Suarez and turned the non-Mayweather-related chatter into a racial row:

And who should take to Twitter to answer Money May's mockery than Manny Pacquiao, who came out in support of Linsanity:

Now, if Lin should be the one to get Mayweather and Pac-Man in the ring together, then he'd truly be a miracle worker, especially after single-handedly resurrecting the Knicks.

Not surprisingly, Knicks luminaries have taken Pacquiao's side in this debate, including star director and noted superfan Spike Lee:

And head coach Mike D'Antoni (but not really):

Tim Tebow vs. Lin Lebow

Lin's unlikely rise has drawn more than a token few comparisons to that of Tim Tebow with the Denver Broncos this past season. The good folks at Deadspin took the liberty of predicting what a Tebow-Lin offspring might look like. Hint: he also plays for the Knicks.

Though, to be fair, Lin is the hotter commodity in the sports world right now, seeing as how he's still playing and all:

Still, Linsanity has a ways to go before it can measure up to the size and scope of Tebowmania, in some respects, at least:

Of course, anything even remotely connected to Tim Tebow is going to bring ESPN's Skip Bayless into the fold:

Leave it to comedian Andy Borowitz to say what everyone was already thinking:

Late Night Linsanity

Now, you'd think that with all the attention Lin's been getting, he'd be a shoe-in for the late night talk show circuit.

Well, he is, though Lin thus far as been reticent to accept any invitations, even from the one and only David Letterman:

Not that Lin's newfound exclusivity has kept him from making the rounds anyway, albeit not in person:

Lin Demand

Strangely enough, Linsanity has brought fame and notoriety to everyone around him, including sports reporters in the Big Apple. Just ask Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, who was swamped by Canadian reporters ahead of Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Raptors:

Here's the photo evidence to support it:

A Star Lin the Making

With all the hoopla surrounding Linsanity, the one question that's thus far crossed most inquiring minds, how the $&%@ did every team pass on this guy?!

I mean, clearly, the kid is a fashion-forward phenom who knows how to rock a headband:

Maybe GMs around the NBA were too reliant on video games for their evaluations of the league's latest sensation:

Maybe they should've consulted Ed Weiland of Hoops Analyst nearly two years ago before passing on him.

Or perhaps they should've taken a closer look at what Lin did to John Wall in the 2010 Summer League:

Or, could it be that the Knicks knew exactly what they were doing all along?

In any case, you can bet the search is on to find the next Jeremy Lin lurking in and lurching through the D-League:

Lin Music

Let's close out our romp through Linsanity with the best musical tributes YouTube has to offer, beginning with MSG's take on Linderella Man:

ESPN's Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg debuted their take on Linsanity, with the help of a Cypress Hill classic:

And last, but certainly not least, the original Jeremy Lin rap:
