Lakers Rumors: Why Ramon Sessions Is Best Point Guard Target for Lakers

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Of all the point guards the Los Angeles Lakers been rumored to have interest in—Gilbert Arenas, Allen Iverson, Jonny Flynn, Rajon Rondo—only one makes sense for them and is a player they could realistically obtain:

Arenas, Iverson and Flynn aren't pass-first point guards, something the Lakers could use with Kobe Bryant still in town. Cleveland's Sessions is a young player and has the ability to score if need be, but more importantly, also is willing to set up teammates and organize the offense.

And the Cleveland Cavaliers can afford to move him, given that they drafted Kyrie Irving with the first overall pick in last year's draft to run the point for the foreseeable future.

The team has reportedly had interest in Sessions for a few weeks now, and ESPN's Chris Broussard has confirmed the team's interest (via Dave McMenamin and ESPNLA.com):

"

The Lakers have also considered making a trade for Cleveland guard Ramon Sessions and Houston guard Jonny Flynn, according to ESPN the Magazine's Chris Broussard.

"

But I'm not the only one who thinks so. Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Times also described Sessions as a good fit for the Lakers back when the Sessions rumors began circulating late January.

"

According to Synergy Sports Technology, Sessions has handled 43.5% of his possessions on pick-and-roll sets. Having such a skill set would free up Bryant from handling the ball, which relieves both his energy output and the pain in the torn ligament in his right wrist. Sessions' assist-to-turnover ratio at 2:1. That would reduce the Lakers tendency toward a stagnant offense. Sessions also hardly cares about scoring. Not only will that require less of an adjustment for his teammates to make, it will also ensure a quick acclimation period.

"

Medina covers the Lakers for the LA Times'   "Lakers Now" blog, so feel free to take his word over mine. Well, except in this case, because we totally agree.

I'm not sure what the price will be for Sessions, but if the Lakers are interested in bringing in a point guard that actually fits their team, they'll overpay slightly for Sessions.

Or maybe go after a player like Steve Nash, though he'll definitely cost more.

Sessions makes a lot of sense for the Lakers. I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see them pull the trigger on a trade to bring him to Los Angeles.
