2012 NFL Mock Draft: QB-Needy Teams Aren't the Only Ones Who Can Shake Up Draft

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

Talk about potential trades in the upcoming 2012 NFL draft have mostly been centered around the likely ransom that the St. Louis Rams will hold on their No. 2 pick, and for good reason.

Teams that need a quarterback right now should do whatever it takes to move up to No. 2 and draft Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, and the Rams would be crazy not to accept one of the offers that would undoubtedly give them the draft capital to solve several gaping holes on their roster.

But for all the talk about the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns making that move up with the Rams, there are several other teams in the first round who have the capacity and need to move around spots. Every year we see it happen, so let's take a look at a few teams that may want to move up in the first round this April that aren't doing so for a quarterback.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

The Cardinals are in a tough spot at No. 13 with their two biggest needs being offensive tackle and pass rushing outside linebacker. That is partly because it's more than possible that the top players at both positions could be off the board by the time Arizona is on the clock. Moving up to get one of the top tackles (Riley Reiff, Jonathan Martin) or rush linebackers (Courtney Upshaw, Melvin Ingram) could help the 8-8 Cardinals take the next step in 2012.

CHICAGO BEARS

No. 19 isn't a terrible spot to be, but the Bears should be in the market for either an impact receiver or offensive lineman in the first round. Who knows where the top receivers could land, but it's possible that the Bears could make a significant move up to secure a player at that position who has the potential to be a No. 1 receiver. Getting one of the top offensive tackles would likely require a trade up, too.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

GM Ted Thompson's strategy is usually to stockpile picks, as the more chances you get, the better the probability of hitting on a player. But he's also shown a capacity to move up to get a player he needs, and the Packers desperately need an impact outside linebacker. Back in 2009, Thompson traded up to get Clay Matthews, the guy he now needs to find a complement to. If there's a guy he really likes and can stomach the asking price, trading up is something Thompson could do again.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

It should be interesting to see how the Bengals approach their draft this April. On one hand, they currently have the draft capital from the Carson Palmer trade to really stock the roster with talented players. But that draft capital also gives them a lot of wiggle room to make more deals, and moving up could be one of those options. Sometimes it's better to move up to get the guy you feel strongest about than pick two other guys who don't inspire the same confidence.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Andy Reid and the Eagles haven't been one to make many moves up, but this could be an "all-in" type season for the long-time head coach. He needs to win next season and win big. I have no doubts that Reid could find a player at No. 15, but moving up to get a special player in the top 10 could help propel an otherwise talented roster get over the hump in 2012.
