Lakers Trade Rumors: Magic Owner Wisely Not Against Moving Dwight Howard to L.A.
Orlando Magic owner Rich DeVos spoke with Josh Robbins of The Orlando Sentinel on Wednesday night about his family’s ownership of the team. But he also stuck in an interesting tidbit about one potential landing place on Dwight Howard’s wish list.
When asked about a potential trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, he made it clear he would not reject an offer out of spite.
"DeVos also dispelled the notion that—if the team's front office determines it must trade Howard—he would veto a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers because the Lakers signed Shaquille O'Neal to a free-agent deal years ago.
"I don't have any emotion on that," DeVos said. "I never talked about where he would go because I don't want him to go. I don't discuss where he might go."
"
This is a good sign for fans of both teams, as it keeps the door open for a potential deal that would revitalize their respective franchises.
The Lakers are 14-11 right now and aren’t quite sure what’s wrong with the team, but certainly know they are under pressure to go on a big winning streak to prove they can get it done come playoff time.
Key members of the franchise even believe that the roster will look different sooner rather than later if they can’t put it together, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles.
"“I'm sure they'll do something," Kobe Bryant said. "They'll tweak something. I don't know what. But I'm sure they'll do something."
Center Andrew Bynum said the team needed to "prove that we're able to win, or else they're going to start doing things."
Pau Gasol said, "There's always a sense that if something was going to happen before, something might still happen."
"
Perhaps a deal for Dwight Howard isn’t such a stretch if L.A.’s “Big Three” are publicly acknowledging things might not be perfect in Hollywood.
While the two sides are obviously nowhere near close to getting anything done right now, they have until the March 15 deadline to make something happen.
Orlando will probably spend some time gauging what they can do to retain Dwight next season, but if they come to the conclusion that they can’t, at least their owner has left the Lakers as a suitable trading partner.
