Kyrie Irving Injury: Updates on Cavaliers Star's Concussion

Josh MartinFeb 8, 2012

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie sensation Kyrie Irving missed Wednesday night's meeting with the Los Angeles Clippers with a concussion and may miss more time on account of the injury, the first of his NBA career.

According to ESPN, Irving suffered the setback on a knee to his head in the fourth quarter of the Cavs' 107-91 loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

Irving struggled with headaches immediately after the game and complained of further pain during warm-ups.

Kyrie Irving is active and ready to play tonight, according to Tom Reed and Mary Schmitt Boyer of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Irving has missed two games since getting concussed against the Heat exactly one week ago.

He's finally been cleared to return by both the team and the league's specialist on head injuries and will be seeing the court tonight.

It's unknown if he will start against the Indiana Pacers, but expect him to make the most of his minutes if he is healthy.

It was uncertain whether Cleveland Cavaliers star rookie point guard Kyrie Irving would be able to play in either of this weekend's crucial games against the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, respectively. Obviously, he has yet to recover from his concussion, as Tom Reed and Mary Schmitt Boyer of the Cleveland Plain Dealer are reporting that he will miss both games.

Clearly, this doesn't bode well for the Cavs, since they are on the precipice of playoff contention. The Milwaukee game in particular certainly looked winnable, but without Irving in the fold, Cleveland is at a major disadvantage.

The team didn't announce Irving's injury until just before tipoff on Wednesday and has not set a timetable for his return.

Ramon Sessions started in Irving's place against the Clips and figures to do so until Irving is healthy enough to play once again.

The news comes as a big blow to the Cavs, who appear to be turning the corner as a franchise thanks in large part to Irving's stellar play. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft leads the Cavs (and all rookies) in scoring at 18 points per game to go along with 5.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds.

Irving had been bandied about as a possible reserve on the Eastern Conference All-Star squad, though he's still expected to be in Orlando to participate in the Rising Stars game.
