Lakers Rumors: Rajon Rondo Would Be Perfect Fit to Fix LA's Point Guard Woes
There are a lot of questions surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers right now, but Rajon Rondo would answer them all.
It's clear the Lakers would benefit from a roster shakeup following a stagnant start which has left the team with a 14-11 record. The Boston Celtics have been shopping Rondo for quite some time despite the young point guard's continued success. So it sure appears to be a perfect match.
Eric Pincus of HoopsWorld reports there could be a trade brewing between the two sides:
"Additionally, sources have told HoopsWorld that the Boston Celtics do have interest in Gasol for their All-Star point guard.
The Celtics have the potential for sizable cap room this summer but there is no true sense that Dwight Howard or Deron Williams would be within their reach.
"
Rondo is one of the NBA's best young point guards, which makes it tough to comprehend why the Celtics are seemingly looking for any chance to ship him away. He isn't an elite scorer, but everything else he does on the court is above average at worst.
He would serve as a massive upgrade over an aging Derek Fisher and would take a lot of backcourt pressure off Kobe Bryant at the same time.
The Lakers have received strong play in the post from both Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, but it hasn't led to a great record because of Fisher's failings at the point. It's an issue that has often led to Bryant attempting to carry the offense on his back like he did during his prime.
That's not a recipe for success because the Lakers superstar is still dealing with his nagging wrist injury, although it seems to be getting better lately. He still needs more help, though.
Rondo should be appealing to the Lakers because he's not simply a stopgap option like a free-agent signing would be. He has the potential to run the point in Los Angeles for another decade.
He's averaging 14 points, 10 assists, five rounds and two steals per game this season. Players like that don't come around often, so the Lakers should jump at the chance to fill their biggest hole with a dynamic threat who can rejuvenate the team's offense.
It should be obvious to the Lakers front office by now that the current roster construction isn't going to bring the franchise another championship. That should lead them to explore all possible options to get back on the right track.
All told, Rondo would be the best option of all.
