Super Bowl Commercials 2012: Trend of Incorporating Famous Movie Tunes Wise Move

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Have you ever gotten a song stuck in your head, and then that song reminds you of a period in your life when that song had particular relevance to you, and then you start thinking about old friends or relationships and next thing you know you've been daydreaming for 10 minutes?

Sure you have. And advertisers know it, which is why a few smart companies have attached their brands to some of your favorite songs from some of your favorite movies.

Take Volkswagen's "Bark Side of the Force," for instance:

What advertisers hope is that you'll leave with a good feeling about the company after watching these cute dogs bark a song from Star Wars. But perhaps more importantly, they hope you may remember that ad every time you hear that particular song or even think of the movies.

Advertising by association—it's a smart move. Cadillac did it by using Led Zeppelin songs in their commercials.

And its why Hyundai was also wise in incorporating a famous movie tune into their commercial:

Doesn't that make you smile a little bit, remembering your favorite parts of Rocky or, if you're like me, taking you back to when the band used to play that song during football games and it would pump me up.

Hyundai—and more importantly, the ad agency who came up with the ad—is smart to tap into those positive feelings. And they're hoping the next time you hear that song or watch Rocky, you might remember this commercial.

Because they and Volkswagen incorporated these songs in a clever manner, they may just accomplish their goal—sticking around in your memory.
