Torshiro Davis Stuns LSU, Signs With Texas: Was it the Right Choice?

Ian HanfordFeb 1, 2012

4-star outside linebacker Torshiro Davis shocked the college football world by choosing to take his talents to Texas instead of LSU.

Davis made the right choice, assuming he wants to play early in his college career.

He is listed as an outside linebacker, and will get a shot to compete at his given position with the Longhorns. However, he has exceptional quickness off the edge and could see time at defensive end if he shows the strength necessary to do so.

Davis weighs in at just over 200 pounds, but his first step and relentless motor makes him a constant threat to beat larger blockers around the corner.

LSU's defense was exceptional last season. The Tigers do lose Stefoin Francois, Ryan Baker and Karnell Hatcher from their 2011 linebacking corps, but they return every key backup from an incredibly deep unit.

If Davis wanted to put his hand in the dirt in Baton Rouge, he would be competing with everyone outside of Kendrick Adams from LSU's crop of defensive ends from last season.

In other words, Davis would win a ton of games with LSU over his career but he may not get a chance to contribute on those teams until his junior season.

The Longhorn defense was very underrated last season because of their disappointing 8-5 season, but the win-loss record does not reflect the talent of Texas' defensive unit.

Texas will lose two of their defensive leaders at linebacker. Emmanuel Acho and Keenan Robinson have both graduated, and their vacancies must be filled. Jordan Hicks returns to the unit entering his junior season.

The Longhorns are very young behind Acho and Robinson, and their positions will be up for grabs in spring practice. Keenan Thompson and Steve Edmond received playing time last season but neither are surefire superstars for Mack Brown's Longhorns.

Davis has the talent to compete with anyone in the Longhorn linebacking corps from the get-go. Texas does not boast LSU's depth, and that leaves the door open for a fresh face like Davis to grab some attention.

Look for Davis to receive playing time in Texas this season, whether it be on special teams or defense. If need be, and if he adds strength, he could replace Alex Okafor at defensive end in 2013 because of his blurring speed off the edge.

Both are excellent programs with excellent pedigrees, but for Davis the Longhorns make sense. He has a chance to play a major hand in the revitalization effort in Austin.
