NBA Trade Rumors: Lakers on Right Track with Pursuit of Ramon Sessions
The Los Angeles Lakers are on the right track in their efforts to improve their roster. This team needs to make moves if it wants to become the championship-caliber team it is accustomed to being, and the Lakers certainly seem to be exploring their options.
One of their pursuits has reportedly led them to Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ramon Sessions. If this is true, it was undoubtedly spurred on by the fact that backup point guard Steve Blake is currently on the shelf with a rib injury.
The Rumors
The rumor comes to us from Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski:
"The Los Angeles Lakers have talked with the Cleveland Cavaliers about possibly acquiring guard Ramon Sessions, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
No deal is imminent, but the Lakers view Sessions as a candidate who could help their depleted backcourt.
"
The rumor is easily believable. Their backcourt is depleted to the point that they have reportedly even considered Gilbert Arenas, for crying out loud.
Why This Makes Sense
The Lakers desperately need a point guard. That fact was true before the season, and it is even more true now that Blake is injured.
Sessions is a 25-year-old guard in his fourth season, and he became expendable the second the Cavs spent the No. 1 pick in the past draft on Kyrie Irving.
Sessions is not a big-time scorer, and he can't shoot from the outside, but he doesn't need to fill that role for the Lakers. LA needs a point guard that can handle the ball.
Sessions is a good ball-handler, and he is excellent in the pick and roll. This is not the ultimate answer for the Lakers, but he would be a nice piece and add quality to their point guard position.
The Lakers could absorb his salary of just over $4 million with the trade exception they acquired for Lamar Odom and give the Cavs their desired draft picks.
