Everton vs. Manchester City: Preview, Live Stream, Start Time and More

Josh MartinJun 7, 2018

Manchester City will be on Merseyside on Tuesday, at the close of the January transfer window, to take on Everton at Goodison Park.

The Citizens have captured their last three English Premier League decisions since drawing with West Brom and losing to Sunderland, though their Carling Cup and FA Cup hopes have since been dashed, by Liverpool and Manchester United, respectively. The Toffees, on the other hand, are on to the fifth round of the FA Cup but have managed just five points in five EPL matches since the turn of the calendar to 2012.

These two sides last met in late September, with Man City scoring a 2-0 victory behind goals from Mario Balotelli and James Milner. Everton had won five of their six meetings with City since Sheikh Mansour arrived in Manchester in 2008, including the previous four.

Player to Watch for Everton: Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan has yet to score since his return to Everton earlier this month, though he's done plenty to make an impact on the pitch in other ways. The American attacker has already accumulated four assists in six appearances for the Toffees, including two in a 2-1 FA Cup victory over Fulham on Friday.

The Los Angeles Galaxy talisman has lent new life to David Moyes' squad and will need to continue to do so if Everton are to hang tough with City this time around.

Player to Watch for Manchester City: Sergio Aguero

With Mario Balotelli suspended and Carlos Tevez's protest nearing its third month, the task has fallen to Sergio Aguero to pick up the slack on City's attack.

And the new boy has delivered, for the most part, with a club-best 14 goals, the third-most of any single player in the EPL at the moment.

Kun has gone cold of late, though, finding the net but once in his last five Premiership ties. Roberto Mancini will need his most prized new boy to be at the top of his game on Tuesday, lest the Citizens find themselves in a dog fight in Liverpool.

Key Matchup: David Silva vs. Jack Rodwell

David Moyes made a point of sicking defensive midfielder Jack Rodwell on City sensation David Silva from the get-go last time these two clubs met, and the strategy worked wonders.

Well, for most of the match, anyway.

Silva was clearly bothered by the assignment, though he still managed to create space to operate in the midfield while aligning himself more closely with Everton's Leighton Baines. If City are to dispatch the Toffees a second time, they'll need Silva to create space and direct the attack from the middle.

What They're Saying

Amidst the hustle and bustle of Donovan's return and the trial of Edson Buddle, his MLS teammate, Everton have once again been active as sellers on the January transfer market.

According to ESPN Soccernet, the Toffees have relinquished Russian winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov to Spartak Moscow for a fee of approximately £5 million. The 26-year-old never quite caught on with the Merseyside club in the two-and-a-half years since he arrived from Lokomotiv Moscow at a cost of £10 million.

Said David Moyes of Bilyaletdinov's departure:

"

He was a great boy to work with, a really good professional. When he played he was totally committed and he did everything he could to succeed. We wish him well. It just didn't quite work and obviously we've decided to sell.

You could probably ask every manager in the Premier League about players and I can think of some clubs you could ask about a lot of players but, yes, Bily's been in here and not quite reached what we wanted. But I couldn't fault anything that he did - he is a good lad.

"

City were involved in some interesting transfer news of their own, though nothing that actually resulted in any substantial movement. Multiple reports have suggested that Liverpool made "tentative enquires" concerning a possible Andy Carroll-for-Carlos Tevez swap with Man City following the second leg of their Carling Cup clash.

Carroll has been nothing short of a flop since he first set foot at Anfield, notching just six goals in 35 appearances after a then-record £35 million move from Newcastle. Tevez, on the other hand, has been absent from the Etihad Stadium on account of an ongoing row with Roberto Mancini, among other reasons.

Prediction: Manchester City 2, Everton 1

Donovan's presence will add some spark to Everton's attack, but not enough to spring a full-blown upset on league-leading City. Look for Mancini's midfield combination to learn from its mistakes last time around and do a much better job of maintaining possession and creating chances for its forwards.
