Florida State Recruiting: Did QB Jameis Winston's Visit Seal Up His Commitment?
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher didn't experience the same type of success this year as he did in his rookie season when he guided the Seminoles to a 10-win season and a Coastal division title. However, Fisher’s certainly making up for his team’s disappointing campaign with his efforts on the recruiting trail, as he’s poised to bring in his second consecutive Top-10 recruiting class in 2012.
One of the true gems of this year’s crop of talent is QB Jameis Winston, who committed Florida State back in August.
Winston, who played for Hueytown high school in Alabama, is rated as a five-star prospect by both Scout and Rivals, and he’s considered one of the top overall recruits in the country. The 6’4’’, 190-pound signal-caller has the combination of arm strength and mobility that’s similar to Florida State’s current starting quarterback E.J. Manuel. The only question is, will Winston ultimately be Manuel’s successor in Tallahassee?
With just a few more days until National Signing Day on Feb. 1, Winston, who has never wavered since committing to Florida State, is still being pursued by a few big-time schools that are looking to make a late run at him and poach him.
Winston has taken trips to Alabama, LSU and Stanford, and obviously all three programs would love to have his services, but the most important trip Winston may have taken could have been his trip to Florida State this past weekend.
This wasn’t the first time that Winston has been to Tallahassee, but this final visit was certainly the most important of them all.
Fisher knew he had to get the hotshot quarterback on campus one more time for reinforcement purposes, and according to an article written by Jeff Sentell in The Birmingham News, it sounds as if Winston definitely enjoyed his visit.
Sentell quoted the blue-chip quarterback as saying, "My commitment to Florida State got stronger this weekend. I can't see my mind changing. But I still got to think about everything. I've got some good schools to decide on and hope by signing day I will have the right decision for me and my family."
Now we'll just have to wait and see if the visit was enough to seal up his commitment and ensure that he’ll sign with the ‘Noles.
We’ll finally find out on National Signing Day, but as of now, it sure sounds as if Winston’s standing firm on his pledge to play for Florida State, even if schools like LSU and Alabama aren’t ready to take no for an answer just yet.
