NBA Rumors: Baron Davis' Return Will Add to New York Knicks' State of Confusion

Michael DixonJun 7, 2018

When Baron Davis returns to the NBA and suits up for the New York Knicks, a confusing situation is going to get worse.

They're already a team with no clear direction on offense, whose two top offensive players don't mesh with each other. When Davis returns, the level of confusion will be amplified to an incomprehensible rate.

According to Tim Bontemps of the New York Post, Davis may well return to the Knicks' practice by next week. Adding another star to the team looks good, but it's not.

Amar'e Stoudemire likes to run; that's where he's at his best. Carmelo Anthony slows the game down, and is best when he has the ball in hand. Those styles don't mesh with each other. Throw Davis in and you have a third style.

He does run like Amar'e, but is 32 years old, and coming off of a back injury. The best way to describe his offensive game at this point would be to call him a poor man's Chris Paul. That's not going to fly well with either Amar'e or Carmelo, let alone both.

The Knicks are already a mess. They are 6-7. The New York offense is in middle of the pack (93.9 points per game, 15th in the NBA). That's with two star players who don't play well with each other.

Now, throw Davis in. He's not on par with Stoudemire or Anthony in terms of star power, but as the point guard, things must run through him. Not only that, but he'll have to be eased back into health, which will take time. That is only going to make the team even more disoriented.

If Davis' style of play worked with either Amar'e of Carmelo, this would be a different story, but it doesn't. This team is going to have a hard time making it beyond the first round of the playoffs, if they make it that far.

I don't care how good the players are. A point guard who's style doesn't mesh with those of his best two players, who don't mix well with each other, will not work in the NBA. Not on a team that's 17th in the league in points allowed (95.2).

The Knicks are in for a long season. The return of Davis may add to the star power of the team, but it won't bring them any more wins.
