WWE 6 Reasons Why John Cena's Nice Guy Routine Has Run Its Course

David LevinJun 5, 2018

Last night, we finally saw the hate.

John Cena is moving toward the all important (work with me here) heel turn that has been much anticipated.

And after his match with Jack Swagger (if you can call it that) we know see the subtle changes moving ever so close to a complete character switch. This is not the Dr. of Thugonomics anymore. This is not the nice Footy Pebbles guy anymore. This is the most popular wrestler in the WWE the last decade who is fighting the demons inside him (with the help of Kane).

And when we saw the look of rage in his contorted face last night, we saw the continued transformation.

This storyline is not going to go away, in fact it should get a lot hotter (no pun intended) as the march to WrestleMania 28 continues.

This is a good move for Cena. The fan base that has always supported him is on the face. "Let's Go Cena, Cena Sucks!"

These reasons are why his "nice guy" image has run its course and we need to see a new brand of "The Champ."

If Hulk Hogan's Face Act Ran Its Course, Then Cena's Has as Well

Cena is the closest thing to a Hogan of this generation.

The "Train, Say Your Prayers, Take Your Vitamins" has been replaced by "Hustle, Loyalty, Respect." It may be a different message, but the WWE was careful to make sure there was a positive message in Cena's core value, much like Hogan.

People want to find fault in the merchandised brand. Even with all his success, there were people in the WWF who booed Hogan.

Cena has been booed since day one and still managed to be as popular as ever. Until now.

The message has to stop.

His "Heel" Act Is More Popular

It seems we love a good villain.

While the fans see a skewed line of good and bad, right now Cena walks a tight rope.

While we hear the chants and boos in the arenas, the cheers may in fact get louder if he is a rule-breaker rather than a vanilla character.

It Sets Up Nicely for Alliances with Other Wrestlers

Cena and Jericho?

Cena and The Miz?

Maybe Cena and Christian.

Cena is on an island right now. Zach Ryder does nothing for his career. He does nothing to pick up the slack and the Ryder/Eve angle is awful. But Cena and a heel as a "partner" is something the WWE must explore.

Another Long Shelf Life

With the WWE looking at younger talents (Ryder, Bo Rotundo, Seth Rollins), Cena needs another move to ensure he is around another 5-8 years.

A heel move makes him more valuable to the company and he can sell to the younger generation.

Wrestlers like Miz, Dolph Ziggler and Ryder are the future of this company. Cena will still be a viable commodity during the decade, but someone needs to push them besides CM Punk.

Cena is the likely character.

Could Set Up for a Punk/Cena Rematch

Could these two find each other again?

Gosh, I hope so. Cena and CM Punk was some of the best wrestling of the year. And when it was "on" the entire wrestling community knew about it.

The storyline was lasting and the drama provided some of the best mic work we have seen in years since Ric Flair and Roddy Piper.

We Aren't 10 Years Old Anymore

What I mean by that is the kids who were fans back when he started are in college now. They want action, love a little "attitude" and don't bleed the purple, orange and red anymore.

As these kids evolve, Cena needs to evolve as well.

If not, the WWE loses a major fanbase they need to keep.
