Broncos vs. Patriots: Tim Tebow's Off-Field Deeds Won't Help Beat Tom Brady

Andrew KulhaJun 5, 2018

Tim Tebow is indeed a very good person, but that's not going to mean a thing against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

All the off-field accolades, charities and time spent with the needy isn't going to help him outshine one of the brightest and most consistent stars in the game.

It's a shame too, because Tebow was really starting to turn me around.

For the record, I think he's an awful quarterback.

Like many, I think his throwing mechanics are way off, and his accuracy is a problem. While I do agree that he's a tremendous athlete, playmaker and leader, I don't see him as a long-term option at quarterback.

Also for the record, I think Tebow is a tremendous man.

I was given the assignment of rounding up some of the biggest stories and opinion about Tebow coming into today's game—which you can see here.

Obviously, there was a whole lot of good and bad opinion towards him, but there was one piece that really stood out to me.

David Clark Scott of The Christian Science Monitor wrote a great article highlighting the community work Tebow does, mainly spending time with fans with serious medical issues.

Before and after games Tebow apparently spends time with these fans, but that's not all he does according to the report:

"

Tebow doesn't just shower attention on these "coolest, most courageous people." He flies them and their family to the game, pays for their hotel and meals, gets them pre-game passes and visits with them after the game, often walking to the car with them.

"

This is just a touch of what Tebow does for others, and to be frank, it's quite inspiring.

I can't help but read something like that and think about how selfish I can be in my own life, but then there is Tebow, who has every means to be selfish, but thinks of others.

To be honest, he won me over after reading that.

I've been an adamant hater and have been very sick of hearing about Tebow, but maybe it's because instead of hearing about this kind of stuff, I've been force-fed from the hype machine of ESPN.

He's not a good quarterback, and it's OK to admit that.

If only his good nature and off-field deeds could help him against the Patriots.

Unfortunately though, that's not how life works.

Tebow's going to be in for quite a reality check going against one of the NFL's premier playoff quarterbacks and coaching tandems in Brady and Bill Belichick.

Their offense puts up big numbers, and with players like Wes Welker, with 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns on the season, and the incredible tight end Rob Gronkowski, who notched 1,327 yards and 17 touchdowns, the Broncos are going to have a hard time keeping up.

Do I expect the Broncos to keep it interesting? In fact, I do.

I think their brand of smash-mouth, grind-it-out football will find some success against a porous Patriots defense, and they should be able to control the clock and limit Brady's possessions.

That being said, I still don't expect them to win the game.

Tebow may have won me over off the field, but he's still got a ton of work to do to prove to me that he can be a legitimate quarterback.
