Is Chris Bosh Right? Dwyane Wade and Not LeBron James Must Be Heat's Closer
According to Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, not LeBron James, should be the Heat's closer. In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, here's what he had to say.
"GQ: Quick hypothetical, toes aside: Let's say the game was tied. 10 seconds left. You had 30 points, LeBron's got 30, and Wade's got 30. You got the same amount of rebounds, same amount of assists—having the same great game. Who takes the shot at the end to either win or loose the game.
Bosh: [immediately] Dwyane.GQ: Why?
"
Bosh: Because of his success in the past, given what he's done. He's a champ. He's an MVP, and he's hit a bunch of last-second shots. That's the time you have to put pride aside a little bit, and do what's best for the team. He's quickest, and he's gonna get a shot off. He relishes those moments.
So is Bosh right? Let's take his reasoning and break it down.
First up, Bosh argues that Wade is a champ. Winner, winner chicken dinner. There's no need to spend a lot of time on that. Wade has one ring. James has none. That's not even a contest.
It's not like Wade was just along for the ride either. He had one of the most clutch, greatest finals performances in the history of the game getting it. There was indeed much clutch to that.
Second, he's an MVP...slight problem there. He's a Finals MVP, but no, he's not an MVP. On the other hand LeBron James is an MVP. In fact he's a two-time MVP. Score it 1-1.
Third, he's hit a bunch of last second shots. Here we need some help.
If we look at the 82 games from a couple of years ago and add what's happened since then (James has one and Wade has two since the list was complied), James has 18 total and Wade has 13 total. James also has a higher percentage.
So Wade does have a "bunch" but James actually has more, 72 percent more to be exact. If we're using Bosh's logic, score it 2-1 James.
There's a lot of false logic built in Bosh's and the public's perception of Wade being more "clutch" than James. Yes, James did have a horrible fourth quarter and overtime against the Clippers, but so did Wade.
The reality is that neither player has been particularly outstanding since the tandem came together. I'm going off of recall here but I think it's possible that Mario Chalmers actually has more game winners than either Wade or James the last two years.
Maybe he should be taking the last shot.
To a point I'm being facetious, but only to a point. The fact is that the game itself should determine who takes the last shot. It should be whomever is open. The Minnesota game was won because Wade got open and because James found him with the ball.
The best thing for the Heat to do is play the game and let whomever has the shot, take it.
