NFL Playoffs 2012: Why Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos Can Win the Super Bowl

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

Now that I got your attention with such a ridiculous title, let's get started. I mean, there's absolutely no way the Denver Broncos can win the Super Bowl, can they? They barely won the AFC West with a sub-par 8-8 record and have almost no passing game whatsoever.

We all know there are more talented teams out there in this year's playoffs and the Broncos have plenty of flaws. But I can promise you that they have as good of a chance to win this year's Super Bowl than any of the other seven teams out there.

I've always said to win in the playoffs, you need to have a great running game. Denver doesn't just run great, they have the best running game in the entire league. They've rushed for over 2,600 yards and average 4.8 yards per touch. They're going to be playing in New England and possibly Baltimore, which are cold-weather environments. They need a running game to be successful. They have that.

While the defense may be average in stopping the pass and below average in stopping the run, they're extremely effective at rushing the quarterback. They were tied for 10th in the league with 41 sacks and already have five in the playoffs, which is the most in this year's postseason. Neither Baltimore or New England have a great offensive line, as Tom Brady and Joe Flacco have been sacked over 30 times this year.

In the playoffs, you also need experience to help calm the team down and lead them through crucial moments in the game. Check mark goes to Denver in this one as well. This team is loaded with veterans like Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams, Elvis Dummerville, Willis McGahee and Renaldo Hill. This leadership may not show in the boxscores, but it does help on the field and is one of the reasons a lot of these younger teams don't last long in the playoffs.

Let's talk about special teams for a minute and punter Britton Colquitt. The Broncos have a team that's punted more than anybody in the league except the St.Louis Rams, but his 47.4 average is one of the best in the league. The only playoff teams that have a higher punt per average are the San Fransisco 49ers and the New Orleans Saints.

Many may not care about the punter and overlook this as an advantage, but flipping the field position is a big part of their game. Just look at which teams competed in this year's national championship. They may not be sexy teams, but if you're able to pin the other team deep in their territory, you'll always have a chance to limit their production and stay in the game.

Then, of course, you have quarterback Tim Tebow. He may not be the best quarterback in the league, but he does provide the leadership that rubs off on the entire team. You may be sick of him being everywhere you turn, but the way he leads this team and gives them confidence really does make them play better than they really are. There's a reason Tebow has this team in the playoffs and was 1-4 with Kyle Orton.

Tebow is also the type of quarterback that is built for the playoff format. He's a tough out, extremely competitive and mostly always finds ways to win. He was a winner in high school, a winner in college and in his short NFL career so far, he's a winner. With the game being on the line, I wouldn't really bet against the guy because he's proven over and over that he will find a way to get the job done.

Looking at the New England Patriots, they've lost the last two playoff games at home. They're also 17-27 against the Broncos all time and have lost four of the last six games against Denver. The Broncos have won two of the three games against the Houston Texans, and Baltimore is the only AFC team that has a winning record against Denver.

The Broncos may not be the sexiest team in the playoffs, but they find ways to win games. They have the formula to success in the playoffs. Run the ball well, rush the passer and force mistakes, have leadership and play good special teams.

Imagining Denver winning thi's years Super Bowl may seem far-fetched right now, but it's not about which team is the best; it's about which team plays the best in three or four games. It's just one game at a time, and the Broncos just have to find ways to win each of them.

This isn't a guarantee that the Broncos win this year's Super Bowl; just don't be surprised if they do.
