New York Jets Coaching Staff Changes Won't Matter Until Rex Ryan Is Gone

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Could the New York Jets be considering a change at Head Coach? Kent Somers of Arizona Republic tweeted this about former Chiefs head coach and Patriots' assistant Todd Haley:

"

"hearing similar things. : Hearing Cards have offered Haley a spot. Jets also showing interest as OC. Maybe even HC option 2."

"

Haley presumably could work wonders for Mark Sanchez, with his experience as a offensive coordinator in Arizona—at least that would be the Jets' hope.

The second half of the tweet is the most interesting and potentially helpful for the Jets. While I don't think Todd Haley is a good option as a head coach, I know Rex Ryan's act has gotten old.

Ryan's loudmouth, brash approach is only tolerable when the team is winning. The Jets did go to consecutive AFC championship games before they failed to make the postseason this year.

Now the expectations are higher, and Ryan seems incapable of taking the team to the next step. His vaunted defense isn't scaring anyone anymore. He has a QB that is struggling, and their relationship is less than ideal, which is tolerable when you win or the QB is playing well, but this year, neither was the case.

It is time for the Jets to make the transition into a new head coaching era. It has happened before—one coach takes a group as far as he can. Another coach steps in, adding a different voice, and the team is able to take the next step.

It happened in Tampa Bay when Tony Dungy kept the Bucs contending, but couldn't get over the hurdle. Jon Gruden came in with the virtually the same group and led the team to their only Super Bowl title in 2002.

The Jets need to find their Jon Gruden, maybe they can even pursue...Jon Gruden.

Either way, it is time for a change.
