Chicago Bulls: Is It Time to Shake Up the Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah Frontcourt?
So far this season, the Chicago Bulls have gone 10-2, which is the best in the NBA at this point of the season. However even though they have been successful, the elephant in the room is how poorly the Bulls' starting frontcourt has performed so far this season.
Carlos Boozer hasn't been terrible, averaging 14 points per game and eight rebounds per game on 52 percent shooting. However, when you consider that at the moment he's the highest paid player on the team, it starts to look a lot worse.
His game thus far this season has been predicated from mostly mid-range jump shots and Derrick Rose setups. He has not created his own offense and has not been a low post threat.
Joakim Noah has been terrible this season. He's only averaging seven points and eight rebounds on sub-40 percent shooting in 26 minutes. He has not brought energy on offense or defense, and he has just outright not been worth the contract he signed last offseason.
It is time to try something new. The starting frontcourt at this point has just not worked well together. The best games that Joakim Noah has played as a Bull were played next to Taj Gibson. The best games that Carlos Boozer played as a Bull were next to Kurt Thomas and Omer Asik.
If I were Tom Thibodeau, I would try putting Taj Gibson into the starting lineup and moving Carlos Boozer to the bench. Carlos Boozer is a player who would play well as a guy put in to create his own offense in the second rotation, since Boozer isn't creating any offense next to Derrick Rose that Taj could not match.
However if he was the number one option; and was creating next to point guard C.J Watson instead of shoot-first Rose, he may be able to help the offensive efficiency of the second rotation and play more productively.
Also, Boozer would work well off of Asik. Asik is an excellent help defender and offensive rebounder, which could cover up two of Boozer's weaknesses. Asik is also a guy who doesn't actually get many rebounds himself, but keeps the ball alive for other players. Boozer is a guy who chases rebounds, so that could actually work out quite well.
In terms of starters, Taj Gibson could produce much of what Boozer has been able to produce on the offensive end, and it's obvious that Gibson is one of the top defensive forwards in the NBA. If Gibson played next to Noah defensively, Noah would have far less wasted energy on defense and could put more effort into rebounding and hustle plays.
The Bulls would without a doubt have the best defensive frontcourt in the NBA.
In terms of ending games, Asik and Gibson should still finish games. In terms of pure defenders, Asik and Gibson are the best. At the end of games, you don't really need many options on the floor outside of Rose, Deng, and maybe Korver because the ball will flow through Rose's hands, regardless of who's on the floor.
Because of that, it makes sense to have the best rebounders and defenders possible on the floor. Noah could easily be plugged in instead of either. But Boozer should not finish games, since he is honestly not terribly necessary when Derrick Rose decides to take over.
All of this is of course is hypothetical, as we know no change will be made in the near future. However if the Bulls' starting frontcourt continues to struggle, it may be worth a shot.
