Dwight Howard to Knicks: Would Magic Trade D12 for Amar'e Stoudemire?
The Dwight Howard trade saga isn’t going away anytime soon. The Orlando Magic need to move Howard before the trade deadline to ensure the organization receives something in return for Howard’s departure.
The New York Knicks are struggling early on this season, and Ken Berger of CBSSports.com seems to think the Knicks would be willing to move Amar’e Stoudemire in exchange for Dwight Howard.
Howard has a desire to play in the New York area having listed one of his desired locations as the New Jersey Nets, who complete the move to Brooklyn next season. Being traded to the Knicks would still allow Howard to play in New York, and he doesn’t have a say in where Orlando trades him.
As Berger points out, the trade makes sense for the Knicks because the chemistry doesn’t seem to be there and the trade would allow the focal point of the offense to be on Carmelo Anthony. It would also allow Tyson Chandler to slide into a more natural role at power forward.
It’s hard to imagine the Knicks actually trading the one superstar that risked it all to come to New York and revitalize basketball for the tumultuous franchise. It would simply be a slap in the face to Stoudemire.
The Magic, on the other hand, would no doubt do the trade. Orlando has stated it is only interested in acquiring veterans, not young talent to start a rebuilding process. Stoudemire is a proven veteran, albeit one with an injury history.
The Magic would require more than just Stoudemire, but he would be the main selling point of the trade to Orlando fans because he is a native of central Florida. The Knicks would likely have to throw in other pieces, as well as possibly find a third team to further compensate Orlando.
Many Knicks fans will detest the possibility, but as Berger points out, it makes too much sense. Howard would get the big market, and no one, not even Adidas, could interfere with him moving there. Howard could team with one of the best players in the game in Anthony, and Orlando would get a desired piece to still stay competitive and make the playoffs.
The Magic could do a lot worse if looking for equal value for Howard.
