2024 MLB Mock Draft: 1st-Round Predictions for Where Top Prospects Will Land

Joe TanseyJul 12, 2024

The Cleveland Guardians have a difficult decision to make at the top of the 2024 MLB draft.

Cleveland will choose between a few of the top collegiate hitters and the best collegiate pitcher in the draft class on Sunday.

The Guardians' decision is not as clear cut as the one the Pittsburgh Pirates made with the first pick in the 2023 draft, when they landed Paul Skenes.

Travis Bazzana, Charlie Condon and Chase Burns could all be incredible major-league talents in their own right, but none of them are generational talents like Skenes.

Cleveland's decision should be narrowed down to those three player by the time it is on the clock.

The Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies will be waiting at Nos. 2 and 3 to select the remaining two top prospects in the draft class.

Travis Bazzana

Travis Bazzana is the current No. 1 overall pick in most MLB mock drafts.

The Athletic's Keith Law and MLB.com's Jim Callis each have Bazzana landing with Cleveland.

ESPN.com's Kiley McDaniel ranked Bazzana as the No. 2 prospect in the draft class, but called him "more polished than Condon in terms of his optimized swing rate, pitch selection, swing path/style and also his maxed-out frame."

Callis ruled Bazzana's selection at No. 1 as a "34 percent" chance of happening in his latest mock draft.

Bazzana hit . 407 with 28 home runs, 66 RBI and a 1.479 OPS in his final season at Oregon State. All of those numbers were improvements on the totals he posted in his second campaign with the Beavers.

The consistency at the plate should not only intrigue Cleveland at No. 1, but help Bazzana breeze through a few minor-league levels to allow him to make a major-league impact sooner rather than later.

Charlie Condon

Charlie Condon settle college baseball ablaze with his home-run hitting prowess at Georgia in 2024.

Condon hit 37 home runs while hitting .433 in the most competitive league in all of college baseball.

Condon should go quicky off the board at No. 2 if Bazzana is Cleveland's top selection.

The Cincinnati Reds would add Condon to their growing stable of young hitting prospects, led by Elly De La Cruz.

A future lineup featuring both De La Cruz and Condon would cause all sorts of headaches for opposing pitchers.

Condon's raw power also makes him an intriguing pick for Cleveland at No. 1. The Guardians would love to have another power bat coming through their farm system as well.

The likelihood of Condon falling past the top two is low. As of now, it looks like he and Bazzana are the first two picks no matter the order.

Wake Forest's Chase Burns is the top pitching prospect in the draft class.

Burns, who pitched at both Tennessee and Wake Forest in college, posted a sub-3,00 ERA in two of his three collegiate seasons. He went 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 2024 at Wake.

The Colorado Rockies appear to be the first team on the board looking at pitching reinforcements.

The problem with that is Colorado is the last place any young pitcher wants to go because it is so difficult to adjust to pitching in the altitude.

Of course, Colorado's plans will change if Bazzana or Condon are still left on the board. That would allow the Oakland Athletics to swoop in and choose Burns at No. 4.

Wherever he lands, there is a high likelihood Burns and his strikeout power will be the first hurler off the board. He could also be in line to be one of the first members of the 2024 draft class to reach the majors.
