Jameis Winston, Giants Agree to Contract Extension as Dart's Backup, Details Revealed in NFL Rumors

Jameis Winston is sticking around the New York Giants for at least a few more seasons.

The team reportedly signed the backup quarterback to a two-year, $13 million extension, per NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, who noted that Winston has "become invaluable to the Giants' quarterback room as a leader, a key part of Jaxson Dart's development, and someone the organization views as the best backup quarterback in football."

Winston, 32, signed a two-year, $8 million contract in March 2025 to join the Giants as a backup quarterback behind Dart and Russell Wilson (Sunday's extension will keep him under contract through the 2028 campaign).

He ultimately appeared in three games (two starts), throwing for 567 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while completing just 56.1 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 23 yards and a score, though the Giants lost both of his starts.

But Winston's impact in the quarterbacks' room and film sessions was important in the development of Dart, who praised him last season.

"He's like a coach on the field, in the film room when we spend extra time," he told reporters in November. "He's quizzing me constantly. He's teaching me things that he's gone through in his past. Our relationship goes far beyond just the football field in the personal life. Handling things that you do good, things that you need to improve on. ... For the team, he brings so much energy and optimism and positivity every single day. He's a guy that never wavers regardless of what's going on around him. It's been a blessing to have him in my corner, for sure."

If everything goes to plan, Winston won't see the field behind the promising Dart beyond garbage time. But the Giants clearly value him as a contingency plan and for what he brings to the table behind the scenes.
