Iga Świątek to Face Naomi Osaka in 2024 French Open 2nd Round After Win vs. Jeanjean

Scott PolacekMay 27, 2024

There will be quite the high-profile clash in the second round of the 2024 French Open women's singles tournament.

Top-seeded Iga Świątek will face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the second round after the former defeated Leolia Jeanjean and the latter defeated Lucia Bronzetti. Osaka needed the full three sets in her first-round win, while Świątek dropped a grand total of three games in her straight-sets victory.

Świątek and Osaka have faced each other just two times in the past and were in somewhat of opposite roles in those matchups.

Osaka won in straight sets in the round of 16 in Toronto in 2019 when she was the No. 2 seed and Świątek was more of the challenger. However, the roles were reversed during their 2022 rematch in Miami when Świątek was the No. 2 seed and won in straight sets against the unseeded Osaka in the final.

At this point, Świątek is the favorite.

She is the top seed and already has four singles titles in 2024 alone, including at the BNP Paribas Open in March. She is also coming off clay-court titles in Madrid and Rome and has plenty of momentum at the French Open.

What's more, Świątek has been largely unbeatable at Roland Garros of late with titles in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

"It feels like home here," Świątek said, per Howard Fendrich of the Associated Press. "I'm really happy to be back. Just feel like I can play really good tennis, so hopefully I'm going to be here as long as possible."

While Osaka has won the Australian Open and the U.S. Open two times each, she has never advanced past the round of 32 at the French Open. The former world No. 1 will be facing quite the uphill challenge against the two-time reigning champion, although she at least knows she defeated Świątek in the past.
