Report: Errol Spence Jr., Sebastian Fundora Agree to Oct. Fight; Cowboys Stadium Eyed
Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora have reportedly agreed to a fight for the WBC junior middleweight title in October.
According to ESPN's Mike Coppinger, the bout is scheduled to take place in Dallas and it will stream on Amazon Prime Video pay-per-view. Organizers are reportedly hopeful that the fight can be contested at the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium, provided the fight date doesn't conflict with the Cowboys' schedule.
The Cowboys have an October 13 home game against the Detroit Lions, but they are on the road Oct. 6 and Oct. 27, plus they have a Week 7 bye, meaning the stadium should be available for most of the month.
Spence, 34, has long been viewed as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing, but he is coming off the first major setback of his career.
After beginning his pro career 28-0 with 22 knockouts, Spence was finally defeated for the first time in July 2023, falling to Terence Crawford by ninth-round technical knockout.
Spence dropped the WBA (Super), WBC, and IBF welterweight titles in what was a unification bout also involving the vacant WBO and The Ring welterweight titles.
After winning the IBF welterweight title in 2017, Spence successfully defended it six times, and picked up multiple other welterweight titles along the way.
Now, Spence will try his hand at light middleweight, which is a weight class in which Fundora has established himself as one of the best over the past few years.
The 26-year-old Fundora beat Erickson Lubin in April 2022 to win the vacant interim WBC junior middleweight title, but after one successful defense, he dropped it to Brian Mendoza in April 2023 in what was the first loss of Fundora's career.
Fundora bounced back in a big way, though, beating Tim Tszyu for the WBO and vacant WBC junior middleweight titles by split decision in March, and improving his career record to 21-1-1 in the process.
While Fundora has long been a rising star, Spence will undoubtedly represent the toughest test of his career to date.
Spence has faced and beaten notable fighters such as Kell Brook, Lamont Peterson, Mikey Garcia, Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia, so he is both battle tested and likely hungry to take back some championship gold following his loss to Crawford.
