Preakness 2024 Lineup: Full Race Guide for All Horses and Jockeys

May 17, 2024

It's been six years since a horse won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. In 2018, Justify was victorious in each of those races, then completed the Triple Crown by also racing to a win at the Belmont Stakes.

Mystik Dan is looking to follow in those footsteps.

On Saturday, the Kentucky Derby-winning colt will be among the eight horses in the field for the 149th running of the Preakness. Mystik Dan is the betting favorite to win, only because Muth (the early favorite) was scratched due to a fever.

Here's everything else you need to know regarding the 2024 Preakness Stakes.

Kenny McPeek has now won each of the three Triple Crown races once. The only victory he had been missing was the Kentucky Derby, but that changed on May 4, when Mystik Dan won in a photo finish at Churchill Downs.

Now, McPeek is seeking a second Preakness win. His only previous victory in the race came in 2020, when Swiss Skydiver got the win.

Mystik Dan wasn't expected by many to cross the finish line first in the Kentucky Derby, as the colt entered the race with only 18-1 odds to win. Yet, he earned the biggest victory of his seven-race career by bouncing back from a third-place finish at the Arkansas Derby in March. His most recent win had been at the Southwest Stakes in February.

Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. had never won a Triple Crown race until riding Mystik Dan to victory at the Kentucky Derby. Hernandez will now be back on the horse for the Preakness.

No trainer has won more Preakness titles than Bob Baffert, who was victorious for the eighth time when National Treasure won the 2023 race. Baffert was expected to have two horses in this year's field (Muth and Imagination), but Imagination will be his lone entrant after Muth got scratched earlier this week.

Imagination and Catching Freedom each has 6-1 odds of winning the Preakness, making them the biggest threats to end Mystik Dan's Triple Crown aspirations.

In six career races, Imagination has never finished worse than second. He's been victorious at two of those events, and he was the runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby in April.

Catching Freedom is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Kentucky Derby, where he placed behind the trio of Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone and Forever Young. The latter two aren't in the field for the Preakness, where Catching Freedom will seek his first victory since the Louisiana Derby in March.

Trainer Brad Cox won both the Kentucky Derby (Mandaloun) and the Belmont Stakes (Essential Quality) in 2021, but he's never had a horse cross the finish line first at the Preakness. That could change if Catching Freedom wins on Saturday.
