Trae Young Trade Rumors: Wembanyama 'Intrigued' About Playing with Hawks PG on Spurs
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama is reportedly "intrigued" by the idea of playing with Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young.
"I will say I have talked to people who know Wemby who have indicated he is at least intrigued by the idea," ESPN's Tim MacMahon said on the Hoop Collective (39:13 mark). "Now, intrigued by that idea and pounding the table are two very different things. I have no idea whether Gregg Popovich would be intrigued by the idea."
San Antonio has been regularly mentioned as a potential suitor should the Hawks choose to trade Young, who seems to have plateaued as the 1A option in Atlanta. Young averaged 25.7 points and 10.8 assists per game this season—his second straight 25-10 campaign—but the Hawks failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
The calculus may have changed in both Atlanta and San Antonio on Sunday, with both teams coming away lottery winners. The Spurs will have picks Nos. 4 and 8 in the lottery after the Toronto Raptors' first-round pick was conveyed, while the Hawks shocked the world to win the lottery.
Both teams face intriguing decisions on how to handle the draft over the next month. ESPN's Zach Lowe noted Atlanta faces a crossroads of sorts as it explores whether to trade the No. 1 pick for a veteran and continue building around Young and Dejounte Murray or make the pick and continue exploring their trade options with the two guards.
The Spurs are armed with cap space and a generational building block in Wembanyama, who finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting and won Rookie of the Year in 2023-24. It's possible they could look to kickstart their rebuild by floating one of those picks for a veteran who fits within Wembanyama's timeline.
All of this makes Atlanta and San Antonio an interesting fit, and that's before we even factor in the Spurs' ownership of the Hawks' future draft picks. Atlanta owes San Antonio unprotected picks in 2025 and 2027 and a pick swap in 2026. If the Hawks ship Young to San Antonio, they would almost certainly want those picks back in the trade or at the very least would ask for protections be placed on them.
