Where Experts Predict Top 2024 NBA Draft Prospects Are Headed Post-Lottery

Joe TanseyMay 12, 2024

The Atlanta Hawks have six weeks to sift through a wide net of potential No. 1 overall picks in the 2024 NBA draft.

There is no clear-cut favorite to be the top selection on June 26, like there was a year ago when the San Antonio Spurs chose Victor Wembanyama.

Atlanta can opt to go the foreign route with either Alex Sarr or Zaccharie Risacher, or take one of the top collegiate players, whether it be Donovan Clingan, Rob Dillingham or Reed Sheppard.

The Hawks won the lottery for the first time on Sunday and they will be followed by the Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs.

Alex Sarr, who plays for the Perth Wildcats of the NBL, could become the second Frenchman to go No. 1 overall in a row following Wembanyama.

The French forward was predicted to be the No. 1 pick by ESPN's Jonathan Givony, who provided the ESPN broadcast with a quick five-man mock draft minutes after the draft order was finalized.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman ranked Sarr as his No. 4 overall player in the draft class behind Ron Holland, Reed Sheppard and Nikola Topic in his most-recent NBA draft big board.

The Ringer's NBA staff projected Sarr would be the No. 1 overall pick prior to the lottery when the Detroit Pistons had the best odds to pick first. Detroit once again fell out of the top four and will pick fifth.

Atlanta entered Sunday with only a three percent chance to win the lottery. The Athletic's Sam Vecenie's voiced how unlikely the lottery victory was for the Hawks.

How the draft plays out is a big question mark because of the varied opinions on players in the draft class. Givony placed Risacher at No. 2 in his immediate mock draft, but Wasserman ranked him as the ninth-best player in the draft class.

Fox Sports' John Fanta outlined how wide open the talent pool for the No. 1 pick still is ahead of this week's NBA combine.

Sarr, Risacher and Topic could all be chosen in the top five from the international part of the draft class.

Sheppard and Dillingham from Kentucky, as well as the UConn pair of Clingan and Stephon Castle could go in the top 10 as well.

Holland and Matas Buzelis from the G League are also consensus top 10 picks. After that group of eight players is chosen, the run on college players should happen.

Tennessee's Dalton Knecht, Isaiah Collier out of USC and Colorado's Cody Williams are among the most notable names from the group of players likely to be available in the back half of the lottery picks.
