Juan Soto on Signing New Yankees Contract in FA: You Can't Tell 1 Month into Season
Star outfielder Juan Soto is off to a hot start with the New York Yankees, but that doesn't mean he's decided whether or not he will re-sign with the team after this season.
"I mean, right now I'm still learning the team. You cannot tell from one month into the season," Soto told Jon Heyman of the New York Post. "You've got to see how it's going to be all the way until the season ends."
Heyman noted that thanks to Soto's age (25) and unmatched skills on the baseball field, he "appears positioned to double the A-Rod deal and set the record for biggest contract ever, depending [on] how it's counted." Alex Rodriguez received a $252 million deal from the Texas Rangers in 2000, which doubled the record contract for any North American team sport at the time.

Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
Soto went 1-for-4 and scored a run in Saturday's victory. He leads the Yankees in virtually every hitting category, most notably posting a .318 batting average, eight home runs, 25 RBI, 42 hits and a .425 on-base percentage.
After being acquired from the San Diego Padres over the winter, it didn't take Soto long to embrace his new surroundings.
"I've really enjoyed it," Soto said. "It's been a great experience. It's a great group of guys. We all feel comfortable playing for each other. It's feeling great so far."
Despite Soto's individual brilliance, the Yankees are 22-13 and sit one game behind the Baltimore Orioles (22-11) for first place in the AL East. New York lost three out of four games to Baltimore prior to its series against Detroit. However, Soto added that he doesn't feel like his teammates are underperforming.
"At the end of the day, I don't feel that way. I feel like we're all doing our jobs," Soto said. "It's just some guys, they haven't gotten the balls to land yet."
