Colorado's Deion Sanders Has Made 0 Off-Campus CFB Recruiting Visits Since 2022 Hire
It's safe to say Colorado football coach Deion Sanders is an untraditional recruiter.
So untraditional, in fact, he hasn't made a single off-campus visit since the Buffaloes hired him in December 2022.
Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today reported Thursday that the school confirmed "Coach Prime did not make any off-campus recruiting visits."
That means Sanders didn't take advantage of the $200,000 annual budget he was given for private air travel for recruiting. He also came nowhere near the 145 off-campus visits former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh made during that same time period as a comparison point.
But it also underscores the Hall of Famer's different approach.
He brought in a stunning 51 transfers ahead of the 2023 season, which was a group that 247Sports ranked as No. 1 in the nation. Arizona State brought in the second most with 31.
Relying more on transfers lessens the need for impact recruits, and the Buffaloes seem to be headed that direction again ahead of the 2024 campaign with a group that includes 24 additions and is ranked No. 5, per 247Sports.
Those transfer rankings are a lot better than the recruiting ones, as Colorado has the 119th best class for the 2024 cycle, per 247Sports' composite rankings.
How this approach translates to the field will be the most important thing.
The Buffaloes went 4-8 during Sanders' first season, which was a disappointing result considering their 3-0 start but still represented progress from their 1-11 record the previous season.
They are now moving to the Big 12 for the 2024 campaign and will look to continue building toward potentially making a bowl game for the first time since the 2020 season. If they don't in the coming years, Sanders may have to reevaluate his approach to recruiting and go on more off-campus visits in the future.
But if they do, Sanders will likely stick to the plan.
