Sting Eyed Kenny Omega; AEW Tag Titles Update; Jey Uso Talks Cody vs. Rock, Reigns
Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from WWE and AEW.
Sting Wanted AEW Singles Match vs. Kenny Omega
Sting never had a singles match during his AEW run, but he had an opponent in mind if the opportunity ever came to pass.
The Icon spoke about his admiration of Kenny Omega following Sunday's Revolution pay-per-view, which doubled as Sting's retirement from pro wrestling.
"A lot of wrestling fans thought for sure that Darby (Allin) was going to turn on me, or that I was going to turn on him! But you know, I would have loved to have had a match against Kenny Omega," Sting told reporters. "Kenny is legitimate world champ material. Obviously, he's been AEW World Champion, but, to me, sometimes how good he is goes underappreciated because he's never been with WWE; some people think he doesn't deserve his accolades. But he is one of the best all-around World Heavyweight Champions I've ever seen, one of the best in the wrestling industry."
It's unclear if an Omega vs. Sting match was ever in the works behind the scenes, but it never came to fruition on the screen. The two legends never even went head-to-head in a tag match, an unfortunate fact likely owed to Omega's absences from AEW television in recent years.
Omega has spent a significant amount of time on the shelf due to injuries and the suspension from his involvement in the Brawl Out backstage fight in 2022. He is currently out of action after undergoing surgery in December for diverticulitis and has no timetable for a return.
Omega has wrestled only nine singles matches since the beginning of 2023 as AEW tries to preserve his body. Still just 40 years old, Omega still has time left in his wrestling prime if he can get healthy, but his absence on AEW television has been notable.
Not getting a Sting vs. Omega match isn't on the level of fans never getting Sting vs. Undertaker, but it is one more "what if?" to leave us pondering.
AEW to Hold Tournament for Tag Team Championships
It wouldn't be a new season without an AEW tournament of some sort, and Tony Khan has something cooking up for this spring.
The AEW boss told reporters there will be a tournament held for the tag team championships after they were vacated by Sting and Darby Allin after Revolution.
Khan did not delve into many details regarding the tournament, simply saying more plans will be revealed "soon."
It's possible Khan could make an announcement as soon as Wednesday's Dynamite, though the company may hold off a week given the expected debut of Mercedes Moné in Boston.
Tournaments have been a favorite booking trope of Khan, and they've almost unilaterally been successful, so we wouldn't expect to see anything less than banger after banger when the next tag tournament kicks off.
Sting and Darby Allin's 25-day reign as tag champs is the second-shortest in AEW history.
Jey Uso Offers Cody Rhodes Help vs. Bloodline
Seth Rollins isn't the only person ready to help Cody Rhodes step up and take down the Bloodline once and for all.
Jey Uso, Roman Reigns' cousin and former right-hand man, offered his aid as Rhodes prepares for WrestleMania.
"Cody, if you need help, call on me. If anybody knows how they get down Uce, it's me. But I'm telling you bro, we need more soldiers," Uso said on the Jackie Redmond Show.
Jey Uso is set for his own Bloodline battle at WrestleMania, as he's widely expected to take on his brother, Jimmy, in a blow-off of their feud that began at last year's SummerSlam. Rhodes and Rollins have Reigns and The Rock set for the opening night of WrestleMania, which will determine the rules for Rhodes vs. Reigns on the second night.
If Reigns and Rock win, Sunday's match will be a "Bloodline Rules" match, which means anything goes. If Rhodes and Rollins pull off the victory, all outside interference is banned.
