Warriors' Andrew Wiggins Out Indefinitely for Personal Reasons; Won't Play vs. Knicks
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr announced Andrew Wiggins will be away from the team indefinitely.
"Wiggs is dealing with a personal matter," Kerr said on 95.7 The Game's Willard & Dibs. "... We do expect him to be back but we just don't exactly know when."
Wiggins is listed as out for Thursday's game against the New York Knicks.
He missed Golden State's 123-112 win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night, with the team ruling him out due to the personal reasons Kerr cited.
Last year, a personal matter took the 2021-22 All-Star out of the lineup for the final two months of the regular season. He returned ahead of the Warriors' first-round playoff series against the Sacramento Kings.
In general, this has been a frustrating season for Wiggins. He was the subject of steady trade speculation leading up to the deadline, though it doesn't look like any deal was seriously close to happening.
The 6'7" wing has also been cited as one reason for Golden State's 30-27 record, good for just ninth in the Western Conference. His 12.7 points per game are his fewest since landing in the Bay Area, and he hasn't been the same kind of perimeter defender he was when the Warriors went on their 2022 title run.
Kerr shifted Moses Moody into the starting lineup to account for Wiggins' absence against Washington, and that might continue to be the plan moving forward.
As much as Wiggins has struggled, taking him out of the squad won't help Golden State's push to climb out of a play-in tournament position.
