Andrew Wiggins Trade Rumors: Warriors Have Fielded Player-for-Player Offers
The Golden State Warriors "have fielded player-for-player offers" involving forward Andrew Wiggins, according to The Athletic's Anthony Slater.
Slater added that "nothing has made them jump," nor has there been a "mandate" from ownership to lower the payroll ahead of the Feb. 8 trade deadline.
Wiggins would be an obvious piece to move in a trade where the Warriors targeted an established veteran upgrade. His $24.3 million salary helps the money match up on both sides, and his theoretical value as a two-way player is attractive to a lot of suitors.
The 28-year-old's performance has caused his trade value to slide, though. Through 39 games, he's averaging 12.3 points and 1.6 assists while shooting 31.0 percent from beyond the arc.
Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer reported on Jan. 17 that the Dallas Mavericks were showing some interest in Wiggins. Days before that, however, Andscape's Marc J. Spears said bluntly on NBA Today "there's not a lot of value for Wiggins right now."
For the Warriors, simply offloading Wiggins shouldn't be the goal because they'd need a return that ideally makes them better and at the very least maintains their current overall strength. Golden State has too much on the line to do a straightforward salary dump.
That's why a player-for-player swap for Wiggins may or may not represent progress in terms of getting to a suitable solution.
If the 6'7" wing's recent stretch continues, the whole point might be moot. His scoring average has climbed to 15.2 points over the Warriors' last six games, and he shot 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.
With those kinds of numbers, holding onto Wiggins absent an overwhelming offer would be the best course of action.
