NFL Rumors: Cowboys' Dan Quinn to Have 2nd HC Interview with Commanders Next Week
The Washington Commanders are holding a second in-person interview with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn "early next week," according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Quinn is also holding a second interview with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, Rapoport reported.
As head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2020, Quinn led the Falcons to an appearance in Super Bowl LI. He finished his Falcons tenure with a 43-42 regular-season record.
If Quinn does not return to a head coach role, he is expected to resume the role he has held with the Cowboys since January 2021, according to DallasCowboys.com's Patrik Walker.
The Commanders are searching for a replacement for head coach Ron Rivera, who was fired following the team's 4-13 season. The team put together a 26-40-1 record through four seasons under Rivera.
The hiring will be part of what ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski called a "sweeping overhaul" of the Commanders' leadership led by new owner Josh Harris.
Quinn isn't the only candidate the Commanders are considering to lead this change. The team has also reportedly held multiple interviews with Ravens assistant head coach and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
With new head coaches already installed at the helms of the Carolina Panthers, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans, the Commanders are one of only three remaining NFL teams currently actively looking for a coach.
That means options have narrowed for Quinn, who after interviewing with the Panthers, Chargers and Titans is now down to the Commanders or Seahawks as potential places where he can return to head coaching in 2024.
Prior to his stint with the Falcons, Quinn worked as defensive coordinator for the Seahawks during the team's back-to-back Super Bowl appearances in 2013 and 2014.
That playoff experience could be enough to help the Commanders or Seahawks overlook the performance of the Cowboys' defense in the team's recent 48-32 wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers.
