Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮
The 65-year-old Fangio spent one year as the Dolphins' DC after working as a consultant for the Eagles in 2022. He's been a defensive coordinator for six NFL teams, and he also worked as the Denver Broncos head coach from 2019 to 2021.
Fangio authored some excellent defenses during his time as the San Francisco 49ers' DC (2011-2014) and the Chicago Bears' DC (2015-2018). In San Francisco, the 49ers finished second twice and third once in the fewest points allowed per game.
In Chicago, the 2018 Bears allowed the fewest points per game in the NFL. That performance led to Fangio being named the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year.
Fangio then moved on to the Broncos, who (mostly) played good defense but struggled offensively largely due to the team playing quarterback roulette over those three seasons. He was fired after going 19-30.
Now it looks like Fangio will head to the Eagles, who fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai and Matt Patricia, who took over defensive play-calling down the stretch. Philadelphia's defense was bitterly disappointing in 2023, to the point where the team gave up the third-most points per game in football.
The Eagles still finished 11-6 and made the playoffs, but Philadelphia lost five of its last six regular-season games before falling 32-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Round.
Fangio would have some talent to work with, including promising young defensive tackle Jalen Carter and defensive end Haason Reddick (50.5 sacks over the past four years).
But Philadelphia needs to reload on that side of the ball, both in terms of the coaching staff and the talent and depth on all three levels. Acquiring Fangio would certainly be a good start, though, as Philadelphia rebounds from a disastrous end to the 2023 campaign.
