Mirra Andreeva Amazes Tennis Fans With Upset of Ons Jabeur at Age 16
Sixteen-year-old Maria Andreeva dominated three-time Grand Slam singles finalist and No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur in the third round of the Australian Open thanks to a 6-0, 6-2 straight-set win that took just 54 minutes.
It was a tough day for Jabeur, who committed 24 unforced errors and won only 4-of-26 first-return points.
Meanwhile, Andreeva took advantage of her opportunities (5-of-7 break points) and dominated when serving, winning 30-of-40 points.
It was a sensational effort from a rising star, who is playing in her fourth-ever major and first Australian Open. She's impressed in her Grand Slam results thus far, notably reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon last year. This Australian Open marks the third time she's reached the third round of a major as well.
Her story for this major hasn't been written just yet, but she's authored a sensational performance that had fans and analysts (including 18-time major singles champion Chris Evert) in awe.
Andreeva will now play in the third round against the winner of the second-round matchup between Diane Parry and Kamilla Rakhimova.
