Lakers' Jarred Vanderbilt, Jalen Hood-Schifino Out vs. Nuggets with Injuries

Francisco RosaOct 23, 2023

The Los Angeles Lakers' revamped roster won't be complete during Tuesday's NBA season-opener against the Denver Nuggets as both Jarred Vanderbilt and rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino will miss the game with injuries, according Spectrum SportsNet's Mike Trudell.

Vanderbilt has been dealing with a heel injury during much of the preseason after signing a four-year, $48 million contract extension back in September. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by Taurean Prince.

As for Hood-Schifino, he will re-evaluated Nov. 3 as he deals with a knee injury.

A big acquisition ahead of last year's trade deadline from the Utah Jazz, Vanderbilt seemed penciled in to be a front court starter for the Lakers this year. In 26 games last season he averaged 7.2 points per game to go along with 6.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals on 52.9 percent from the field.

Luckily for Los Angeles, it has plenty of front court reinforcements to supplement it during Vanderbilt's absence. Prince was signed in free agency as well as Christian Wood, Jaxson Hayes and it managed to retain Rui Hachimura.

So, hopefully the squad won't feel his absence too bad thanks to their depth.

Hood-Schifino, who was selected No. 17 overall in this year's draft, was expected to have a sizable role in the Lakers' backcourt following an impressive run at Summer League. The former Indiana star averaged 13.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in six appearances.

He's currently listed third on the depth chart behind D'Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent at point guard.
