Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offense: Here's Your Instant Fix for 2012

Tom EdringtonJun 7, 2018

Now that Tampa Bay Buccaneer co-chairman Joel Glazer has publicly declared "We are going to spend whatever it takes to win," we're here today to show you just how easy it is to fix this dreadful offense that the Bucs had last season.

We'll simply call it: Remaking the Buccaneer Offense 101.

First and foremost, Kellen Winslow Jr. is out the door so fast his head would spin. This guy was nothing more than a glorified, slow slot receiver. He wouldn't know what a block was if one hit him in the face.

GM Mark Dominik, who survived the demise of Raheem Morris by staying quietly locked in his office for 10 straight weeks, made Winslow the highest-paid tight end in football. What the hell was he thinking?

Okay, let's get a guy who is a stud.

Jermichael Finley. You want a dynamic playmaker? This guy is big, strong, fast, catches the football and can block. He's a huge cog in the Packers offensive machine. This guy is light years better than Winslow. Winslow's defining moment came in the Atlanta game when he blew an assignment, crashed into Kregg The Great Pumpkin Lumpkin and caused that pick six interception by Josh Freeman.

Fix No. 1:

Go get Jermichael Finley.

Finley's not the only tight end available, but he's the best. There's also Greg Olsen from Chicago, Mercedes Lewis from Jacksonville and Visanthe Shiancoe from Minnesota and they're all better than Winslow. Winslow has to go, plain and simple. He's one of the goobs who basically fired Raheem Morris.

Now for fix No. 2. Pay close attention:

Mike Williams IS NOT a No. 1 receiver. He's a No. 2.

We're going to go out and get a No. 1, and here's our list:

Vincent Jackson (San Diego): This guy's a dynamic playmaker; 6'5", 230, a true No. 1.

Marques Colston (New Orleans): Love this guy. Makes huge plays, big target, great speed and with Drew Brees due for a Peyton Manning-type contract. The Saints may not be able to pay this guy.

Dwayne Bowe (Kansas City): Another big guy. Fast, dynamic playmaker.

Steve Johnson (Buffalo): Not as good as the others, but still a nice No. 1.

If I had my pick, I'd go for Colston. Then you can move Williams to the No. 2, and that's what he truly is. One big mistake in the NFL is trying to take a No. 2 and make him into a No. 1 (see the great Alvin Harper experiment by the Bucs).

With Williams moved to the No. 2, Arrelious Benn can become the No. 3, which is what he is. Now your receiving corps is fixed. You have a great tight end and a viable No. 1 receiver who will allow Williams and Benn to play where they are supposed to.

Fix No. 3, and this is a big one:

Dynamic playmaker at running back. LeGarrette Blount is unreliable, a fumbler and simply didn't put in the time to learn the offense properly. He's still a viable back but not as a starter.

Marshawn Lynch (Seattle): This is what a starting back in the NFL looks like.

Arian Foster (Houston): This is what a starting back in the NFL looks like. Besides, Glazer said they'll spend whatever it takes to win.

Matt Forte (Chicago): This is what a starting back in the NFL looks like. The Bears are cheap, and now you've got a true starter.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, at tight end, wide receiver and running back, you have dynamic playmakers.

Other offensive fixes:

It's time for Jeff Faine to go. He's way past his prime and totally overpaid.

The Bucs can also add some offensive line depth through the draft and minor free agents. Get someone to push Jeremy Trueblood.

That's about it. With this cast around him, Josh Freeman can quit looking like a deer in the headlights. He'll have guys open, he'll have choices and he'll have someone to hand the football to who can take it to the house without fumbling.

It's not rocket science, is it?
