NBA Rumors: Why Kings Won't Be Able to Dump DeMarcus Cousins
Sacramento has said that DeMarcus Cousins demanded a trade, but the Kings will have a tough time moving the enigmatic big man.
Sacramento coach Paul Westphal crippled his trade value by criticizing Cousins in the statement he released on Sunday.
If a player demands a trade, or you intend to move him, you don't just post some lengthy statement on your team's official website. You keep quiet and try to get a deal done as quickly as possible.
You shouldn't make any public statements, let alone say that Cousins "continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling/unable to embrace" the team concept.
The Kings weren't going to get equal value for Cousins anyway, but after Westphal's statement, they will get nothing but insulting lowball offers.
Also, the teams that are interested in acquiring Cousins don't have many assets the Kings would covet.
The Detroit Pistons are reportedly monitoring the situation very closely, but they have little to offer. They aren't giving up Greg Monroe, and their only other intriguing players are scoring guards. Lord knows the Kings have plenty of those.
The Rockets are also planning to call Sacramento, but all they have to offer is Jordan Hill (no thanks) and Goran Dragic (ditto).
The Kings obviously want to get rid of Cousins, but they screwed themselves over. They will have a tough time trading him, and if they do ship him out, they will be getting very little in return.
