2012 NFL Mock Draft: Should Matt Kalil or Robert Griffin III Go Second Overall?

Chris TrapassoJan 3, 2012

The St. Louis Rams hold the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, but face quite the dilemma over which prospect to take—USC's offensive tackle Matt Kalil or the Heisman Trophy-winner quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Not a bad problem to have, I guess.

This selection is extremely vital for a rebuilding club like the Rams, and it's quite the unique situation because of the presence of $78 million man, quarterback Sam Bradford

It'd be much easier in terms of negotiating with other teams for St. Louis to make Kalil the pick, but RG3 adds an interesting dynamic.

So tackling this debate has to go two ways.

If the Rams want to honor their initial dedication to Bradford, they should draft Kalil, especially with the concussion issues surrounding 2009 first-round pick Jason Smith and the regression and injury to Rodger Saffold in 2011.

However, because they have so many voids on both offense and defense, if they believe they can receive a handful of picks for Sam Bradford from another club, they should pick Griffin III.

He has so much upside and with a multitude of extra selections in the 2012 draft and beyond, they could build the team around him.

More receiving options along with linebackers and cover men would be a start.

I wasn't as high on Bradford as everyone else was when he came out of college, but he certainly possesses an impressive skill set and as he demonstrated in his Offensive Rookie of the Year-winning campaign a year ago, he can be a successful signal-caller.

But an overhaul is needed in St. Louis, and will have a new coach and general manager to begin the process.

Getting arguably the most talented and athletically-gifted quarterback along with additional draft picks is the direction in which the Rams should go—it just won't be easy to find a suitor for Bradford.

If I'm hired as the Rams GM, I'm taking RG3 and putting Bradford on the trade block. If no one is interested, I'd be forced to take Kalil which is quite the consolation prize.
