5 Ideas to Spice Up WWE WrestleMania 39 Match Card
In four weeks, WWE will return to Hollywood to host The Showcase of the Immortals. The company's biggest event of the year already has its marquee match in place, but there are still a few loose ends on the road to WrestleMania 39.
As of today, there are four matches scheduled for the two-night event. So, WWE still has two cards to fill with some of its prominent superstars and champions from Raw and SmackDown.
Obviously, some matchups like Logan Paul vs. Seth Rollins are already coming together following their interactions at Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber. The Usos will undoubtedly defend their undisputed tag team titles against Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens as well.
Unfortunately, the build to The Show of Shows isn't loaded with as many surprises as it used to be. All the backstage news available on the internet makes it difficult to keep plans for the event a secret. However, there's still time to add some exciting wrinkles to what could be a predictable card at WrestleMania 39.
Revamp The Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal
1 of 5WrestlingNews.co's Angel Aramboles reported that Triple H wants to book a small card for WrestleMania this year. This could mean that many wrestlers won't have the chance to compete at the event.
At prior editions of The Show of Shows, The Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal would allow the company to utilize the talent that wasn't part of an ongoing storyline. However, the annual match has occurred on SmackDown for the past two years, and it reportedly isn't planned for the upcoming show.
WWE should use this opportunity to reintroduce the battle royal at The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment and give the winner a shot at the title of their choice. The match is a fun way to put more wrestlers on the card, but it usually felt irrelevant afterward because the last man standing didn't benefit in the long run.
It's a good concept in theory, but adding stakes could make it a serviceable replacement for the Money in the Bank match, which initially took place at WrestleMania.
Turn Brock Lesnar vs. Omos into a Triple Threat Match
2 of 5Brock Lesnar vs. Omos is a real head-scratcher. That's not to say that the Nigerian wrestler doesn't deserve a spot on the card, but this match came out of left field.
Most fans expected a satisfying conclusion to The Beast Incarnate's year-long feud with Bobby Lashley. Instead, the former WWE champion seems poised to have an even more random showdown with Bray Wyatt.
It would make much more sense for Lashley's lingering plotlines with Lesnar and MVP to intersect in a triple-threat match. The All Mighty has come so close to defeating his long-standing rival in their last three encounters, and he should get the chance to finish this.
Adding Omos to the mix would force his former manager to pick a side ahead of a long-awaited Hurt Business reunion.
One Last Challenge for the United States Championship
3 of 5WWE has dropped some heavy-handed clues that John Cena will be Austin Theory's WrestleMania opponent.
The two have been linked for the past year because of the current United States champion's similarities to one of the most famous men to hold the title. Even more, Theory has mockingly referenced Cena on recent episodes of Raw and SmackDown.
Some savvy fans may have noticed that the 25-year-old defeated one of his idol's greatest rivals in the main event of the latest episode of Raw. The Now should continue to hold open challenges for the U.S. title all the way up to WrestleMania 39, where Cena will finally answer the call.
It's the logical conclusion to this storyline and a gratifying callback to the lineage of the United States Championship. The mantle finally feels like an integral part of WWE programming again, and Theory has overcome an underwhelming run as Mr. Money in the Bank.
Beating Cena to retain his title will be an admirable way to pass the torch and add even more prestige to his second U.S. title reign.
Bayley vs. Trish Stratus
4 of 5Unfortunately, Bayley didn't get to compete on The Grandest Stage of Them All for the last two years.
In 2021, WWE inexplicably didn't have plans for her after her record-setting reign as the SmackDown women's champion. Last year, The Role Model was still recovering from a knee injury she suffered ahead of Money in the Bank.
So, the company should reward her with a meaningful matchup at WrestleMania 39. A surprise encounter with Trish Stratus seems like the best option, as she recently helped Becky Lynch and Lita win the women's tag titles.
Damage CTRL vs. Stratus, Lynch, and Lita would also be a great way to cap off her feud with The Man. However, the new champions could also face Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler at the event.
If that's the case, a one-on-one match between Bayley and the WWE Hall of Famer could be a pleasant surprise.
Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn vs. The Usos Should Headline Night One
5 of 5Things are a bit different now as WWE doesn't sell tickets to WrestleMania based on the superstars on tap or the top storyline.
Nevertheless, the company should still give its most popular superstars the highest honor of the weekend. To that end, Sami Zayn deserves a chance to headline night one of the event this year.
The Great Liberator has become a proven draw as part of the hottest storyline in pro wrestling. So much so that many fans hoped he would dethrone Roman Reigns in his hometown at Elimination Chamber.
Moreover, The Bloodline is far and away the most significant act in the company right now. So, Main Event Jey Uso and Zayn should take their rightful place at the top of the card. They've earned the chance to close the show on night one.
This may not be a world title match like some viewers hoped, but Cody Rhodes seems destined to topple The Tribal Chief. Regardless, the inevitable "Steenerico" reunion to take down The Bloodline will be an unforgettable moment, too. Their ensuing win over The Usos is the best way to end the first night and send fans home happy.
