WWE WrestleMania History: Most Impressive Stats Throughout PPV's Legacy

Mike ChiariMar 31, 2023

For nearly four decades, WrestleMania has been one of the biggest spectacles in sports and entertainment, and it has produced no shortage of stars and legendary moments.

The 39th edition of WWE's spectacular will emanate from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Saturday and Sunday, and it could go down in history as one of the biggest WrestleManias ever.

Much has happened in the 39 years since the first WrestleMania took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1985, and the legacy of WrestleMania has helped make lifetime fans.

With WrestleMania 39 on the horizon, here is a look at some of the most impressive WrestleMania-related stats that have been accrued during the event's history.

Most Decades With a WrestleMania Match: The Undertaker (4)

Perhaps no Superstar is more synonymous with WrestleMania and its success than WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker.

The Phenom holds a bevy of WrestleMania records that may never be broken, including most WrestleMania matches (27), most WrestleMania wins (25) and most consecutive WrestleMania wins without a loss (21).

Taker's streak was and forever will be one of the greatest aspects of WrestleMania, as it stretched from his WrestleMania debut at WrestleMania 7 in 1991 until his first loss to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30 in 2014.

As remarkable as all of those records are, The Undertaker's most amazing accomplishment may be that he is the only person to compete in a WrestleMania match in four different decades.

Many others have competed at a WrestleMania in three different decades and come close to The Deadman's mark, but none have quite been able to match him.

Taker had his first WrestleMania match in 1991, and he went on to work several across the '90s, 2000s and 2010s. It wasn't until 2020 that his in-ring career came to an end.

WrestleMania 36 was held in 2020 with no fans in attendance because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it turned out to be a significant WrestleMania since it featured The Undertaker's final match.

In the main event of Night 1, Taker and AJ Styles went at it in a Boneyard Match, which took place on location in a cemetery. The Undertaker was victorious in the memorable bout, and he rode off into the darkness on his motorcycle.

It was a fitting end to The Undertaker's wrestling and WrestleMania career since he was the talk of the show in the weeks and months that followed.

Most WrestleMania Matches Without a Loss: Rob Van Dam (4-0)

For many years, The Undertaker held the record for most WrestleMania wins without a loss, but when he fell to Lesnar at WrestleMania 30, a new record holder emerged.

While it isn't talked about much among wrestling fans, the Superstar with the most career WrestleMania matches without suffering a loss is WWE Hall of Famer and ECW legend Rob Van Dam, who is 4-0.

From 2002 through 2007, RVD had four matches on the official WrestleMania card, and he was victorious each time.

It started at WrestleMania 18 when he defeated William Regal in the opener to become the new intercontinental champion. He won another title match at WrestleMania 20, as he and Booker T successfully defended the World Tag Team Championships in a Fatal 4-Way tag team match against The Dudley Boyz, La Resistance and the team of Garrison Cade and Mark Jindrak.

RVD's biggest WrestleMania win came at WrestleMania 22 when he won the second-ever Money in the Bank ladder match, which led to him beating John Cena for the WWE Championship a couple of months later.

Van Dam's final WrestleMania match and win came at WrestleMania 23 when he formed a team of ECW originals with Tommy Dreamer, Sabu and The Sandman to beat Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von, Matt Striker and Kevin Thorn.

At 52 years of age, Van Dam's days as a full-time wrestler are likely over, but he is still wrestling select dates, so it isn't outside the realm of possibility that he could have another WrestleMania match at some point and add to his record.

Most Years Between WrestleMania Matches: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (21)

Over the course of WrestleMania's rich history, no Superstar has gone longer between two WrestleMania matches without having a bout on the Grandest Stage of Them All in the interim than WWE Hall of Famer Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin nearly set the record, as he retired after losing to The Rock at WrestleMania 19 before returning 19 years later to face Kevin Owens in the main event of Night 1 of WrestleMania 38 last year, but he fell just short of Steamboat's mark.

In terms of his WWE accomplishments, Steamboat is best known for beating "Macho Man" Randy Savage for the Intercontinental Championship in a classic encounter at WrestleMania 3.

One year later at WrestleMania 4, he lost to Greg "The Hammer" Valentine in the first round of a tournament to crown a new WWE champion, which was won by Savage. That would be Steamboat's final WrestleMania match until 21 years later.

Steamboat left WWE for NWA/WCW in 1988, and while he returned to WWE in 1991 as The Dragon, he was not part of the WrestleMania 7 card.

He was gone from WWE in favor of WCW again by the end of 1991, and Steamboat did not have another WWE match until 2009.

At WrestleMania 25, Steamboat teamed with fellow legends "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka in a three-on-one handicap match against Chris Jericho.

Piper and Snuka were eliminated quickly, but Steamboat, who was 56 years old at the time, went on to have a great match against Jericho, which Jericho won.

Steamboat parlayed that into a singles match against Jericho at Backlash 2009, which was his last major televised bout.
