Blake Griffin: Why Los Angeles Clippers Star Should Win MVP

Adam SpencerJan 1, 2012

Blake Griffin and the new-look Los Angeles Clippers are going to be a lot of fun to watch this season. Chris Paul is the perfect point guard for Griffin, who always provides plenty of highlight-reel dunks.

But this season, Griffin will prove he's more than just highlights. He has what it takes to win MVP.

With Paul in the mix, the Clippers are talented enough to make the playoffs for the first time in a long time. And, with an improved team, Griffin should receive more attention for his all-around game.

Right now, though it's early in the season, Griffin is second in the NBA in points, behind only LeBron James. James is averaging 33 points per game, Griffin is averaging 28.

He's scoring from everywhere on the court, not just in the paint. He has a good jump shot that he can hit from most places on the court.

But, he's not just a scoring threat. He's a good rebounder too, averaging 9.7 rebounds per game.

If he can get his rebound average to above 10 per game and maintain a 25-plus point per game average, it'll be hard to ignore him in the MVP voting.

He's not the best defender in the NBA, but he's improving in that regard as well. Having DeAndre Jordan to help him in the post certainly helps.

Jordan is in the post, keeping players from driving the lane and blocking their shots when they do. Griffin, meanwhile, has been improving as a perimeter defender who is just as capable outside as he is inside.

He's turning into an all-around player, and that's good news for Clippers fans.

Oh, and he's still the most exciting player in the NBA, providing two or three highlight reel dunks every night.

The dunks and alley-oops will keep him in the national spotlight, but it's time for the national media to realize Griffin isn't just a one-trick pony.

He's a solid player and if he keeps up his high level of play, he deserves to win the MVP award after the season.
