Waiver Wire Week 4: Khalil Herbert, Mack Hollins Highlight Pickups to Know

Joe TanseySep 26, 2022

The rushing attack is the only effective part of the Chicago Bears offense through three weeks of the 2022 NFL regular season.

Chicago produced 281 of its 363 total yards on the ground in Sunday's win over the Houston Texans, but David Montgomery was not a factor in earning those numbers.

Khalil Herbert took over early for the injured running back and finished with a career high of 157 rushing yards.

The 24-year-old immediately elevated himself to the top of the fantasy football waiver-wire list with his outing at Soldier Field.

Montgomery is officially down as day-to-day, but he is dealing with two separate injuries: one to his ankle and another to his knee.

The concern over the Iowa State product missing a single game should lead to the mass addition of Herbert in all fantasy football formats.

The 2021 sixth-rounder turned into the top waiver-wire pickup for Week 4 with his Sunday performance, but there are a few other players worth consideration.

Mack Hollins produced in a fantastic performance for the Las Vegas Raiders, Romeo Doubs emerged as a key target for Aaron Rodgers, and Marcus Mariota continued to prove he has QB2 value because of the damage he can do with his legs and arm.

Khalil Herbert will likely be the most added player in fantasy football between Weeks 3 and 4.

The former Kansas and Virginia Tech player carved up the Houston Texans defense for 157 yards on 20 carries, both of which were career highs, in relief of the injured David Montgomery.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters after the win that Montgomery is day-to-day with ankle and knee injuries he suffered in the first quarter.

"He's going to be day-to-day, so that's a positive," he said. "We'll see where he is tomorrow and re-evaluate it from there. It's a positive, for sure."

Montgomery is Chicago's No. 1 running back when healthy, but the Bears may be willing to bring him back slowly if Herbert continues to produce in the ground game.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native totaled 45 yards on nine carries in Week 1 and produced 38 yards on four carries in Week 2. He was already trending in the direction of being a potential streamer for players on byes or in bad matchups.

If Herbert is the starter in Week 4, he should be expected to see a heavy volume of touches since Justin Fields has had under 100 passing yards in each of the last two weeks.

Mack Hollins, WR, Las Vegas

Mack Hollins may have the most volatile fantasy value of any NFL player after Week 3.

The 29-year-old turned in a 158-yard performance against for the Las Vegas Raiders with Hunter Renfrow out injured and Darren Waller not producing as many yards as expected.

Hollins has 14 catches on 19 targets for 240 yards and a score through three weeks. His fantasy value has skyrocketed, but there is room for caution when approaching him on the waiver wire.

Davante Adams has 15 more targets than the Raiders player, and Waller is tied with him on 19 targets.

Las Vegas' season could develop into one in which Derek Carr relies on Adams and Waller a lot more and continues to trust Josh Jacobs in the ground game.

Renfrow, who has 16 targets, could return and take a bite into Hollins' production as well as the season goes on.

The North Carolina product's early-season production suggests he could be a reliable WR3 or flex option moving forward.

For now, you should attempt to ride the hot hand and potentially trade him in a week or two if his target share begins to dip with Adams and Waller in the fold.

Romeo Doubs, WR, Green Bay

Aaron Rodgers loves to throw to wide receivers he can trust. That much is evident with Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, and now with rookie Romeo Doubs.

The 22-year-old leads the Packers in targets through three weeks and scored his first NFL touchdown in Sunday's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Doubs is Green Bay's early leader in receiving yards with 137. None of the other younger players on the roster are close to his total. Lazard, Cobb, Sammy Watkins, Aaron Jones, A.J. Dillon and Robert Tonyan sit between Doubs and the rest of the prospective new targets for Rodgers.

The Nevada product appears to have gained the trust of his quarterback and that should lead to more consistent totals as the Packers figure out their passing game without Davante Adams.

A three-game home stand against New England and both New York teams awaits for Green Bays. That could be the ideal stretch for Rodgers and Doubs to work on their chemistry and help the Packers get to the top of the NFC standings.

Marcus Mariota deserves recognition for his solid start inside the Atlanta Falcons offense.

The 2015 No. 2 pick has 640 passing yards, 92 rushing yards and five total touchdowns.

Mariota ran for a score and delivered another through the air in Atlanta's first win of the season in Seattle.

The 28-year-old carries some fantasy football intrigue because he has two of the most talented young pass-catchers at his disposal in Drake London and Kyle Pitts. The former leads the Falcons in targets, receptions and receiving yards, while the latter finally had his breakout game in Week 3 with five catches for 87 yards.

The veteran signal-caller proved the Atlanta offense can be competent with him at the helm and he could be a nice streaming option, or bye-week replacement, in the coming weeks.

No one is going to sit here and say you should start Mariota on a weekly basis, but he could be a shrewd waiver-wire pickup now and help you when the top-tier quarterbacks aren't playing.
