Miami Dolphins Should Make Jon Gruden Their New Head Coach

Giorgos KassakosDec 31, 2011

Jon Gruden is a man surrounded by myth.

He was the head coach of that Buccaneers team that won the Super Bowl XXXVII, becoming the youngest coach ever to win that silver piece, but we all know it was Tony Dungy’s hard work that made this team. Far from that, he reached the playoffs only twice in his final six years at Tampa Bay and his regular season record is 95-81—not an impressive number.

Well, these facts cannot be challenged or overlooked, but they are not the whole truth.

Jon Gruden is a man that the football world respects. He won a Super Bowl in his first year with a team—punishing Al Davis and his Raiders for their decision to trade him for some picks. Even in hard times, he was an inspiration for many of his players and he always tried to get the best out of them, not by praise, but by speaking his mind.

The Miami Dolphins have a lot of talent in their roster, but their third-rate performance and tough divisional opponents keep them from claiming a playoff spot. Since Sparano got fired, they truly have one option: They have to hire a good head coach and give him two to three years to turn the team around. There are a lot of coaches available, but only a handful of them are proven helmsmen that can steer their ship to success.

Jon Gruden is certainly one of them.

Football Schedule.me says that Gruden is looking to return to the NFL as a coach. If he does, he definitely wants to win.He had his share of criticism through the years and winning is the best answer. Additionally, Gruden is an amalgam of old, tough-coaching attitude and the “modern” West Coast offense. With the NFL turning more and more into a pass-happy league, the teams that can spread their offense effectively are more likely to succeed.

The last few years, the Phins were quick to abandon the run, but didn’t manage to establish a solid passing game due to the inconsistent play from the quarterback position (the receivers haven’t been playing their A-game too, but they have good potential).

Since the Dolphins want to rely on the pass so much, they should bring in someone who knows how to make it work and that’s where Gruden’s name makes sense—and Bill Cowher's does not.

Jon Gruden made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a competitive, hard-to-bring-down team without ever having top-tier quarterbacks. Undoubtedly, they were better than Chad Henne and probably Matt Moore, but they were better protected too. That can change if Miami adds Riley Reiff with its first-round draft pick.

With the New York Jets being in a stall and the New England Patriots’ defense covering no one, the Dolphins might be able to reach the postseason next year. They have to get their offense going and believe me, that’s a good way to help their defense too. I can’t imagine a more suitable candidate for the head coaching position than Jon Gruden.
