UFC 141 Results: How Alistair Overeem Will Save the Heavyweight Division
After a long-lived career in several organizations such as Pride, Strikeforce and Dream, Alistair Overeem finally made the transition to the Ultimate Fighting Championship earlier this year.
However, many fans weren't as welcoming as Overeem would have liked as they viewed the UFC newcomer as unproven and overrated.
Many felt Overeem's inability to fight at the highest level of competition was a direct result of his success inside the sport of MMA.
However, Overeem proved this to be irrelevant when action began on December 30 in his man event showdown with Brock Lesnar.
As Overeem and Lesnar circled the Octagon, the world awaited as history was about to unfold.
Despite many predictions, the dangerous striking of Overeem never showed as it was his knees that ultimately led him to being victorious in his Octagon debut.
Not only did Overeem win convincingly, but he forced the former UFC heavyweight champion Lesnar into retirement.
While Overeem certainly had the highest of expectations when it was announced he was joining the UFC, little did we know how good he actually would be.
Not only did Overeem prove he's more than capable of squaring off with the top tier heavyweights but he's arguably the most dangerous fighter in the 265-pound weight class.
Overeem's ability to stuff the takedown is something we've rarely seen against an opponent like Lesnar.
But it's Overeem's vicious strikes and knees that have transformed him into an overall complete fighter.
It's likely Junior Dos Santos is concerned his heavyweight title may once again flip flop shoulders as he'll be facing the toughest opponent of his career at some point in 2012.
However, Overeem could put an end to the never-content heavyweight title as he has the skill set, build and style to do so.
It's likely Overeem could not only be a dominating force in the heavyweight division, but hold the title for a very long time.
Alistair Overeem will save the heavyweight division.
