Celebrities from stage and screen joined softball and baseball legends at Dodger Stadium in a game that was action-packed from start to finish. Jennie Finch, Lisa Fernandez, Action Bronson, Quavo, CC Sabathia, Andre Ethier, J.K. Simmons and Bad Bunny were just a few of the big names to take the field on Saturday evening.
Team Brooklyn defeated Team Los Angeles (it was a Dodger-themed game) 15-13.
The surprises started early, when former Los Angeles Angels standout and nine-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero came in to pinch hit for Bad Bunny in the first inning:
Newly-minted Hall of Famer David Ortiz came in to pinch hit for Bad Bunny in the second.
Things got even wilder in the third inning, in the midst of a Team Brooklyn surge from down 8-3, when MLB All-Star Hunter Pence nearly went after actor Bryan Cranston (in jest, of course)—and it wasn't the last bit of drama involving the Breaking Bad actor that fans would see:
By the middle of the third, Team Brooklyn led by three.
Team Los Angeles battled back later in the third, aided by a thrilling inside-the-park home run by singer JoJo Siwa. However, Team Brooklyn was able to regain the lead in the fourth.
More shenanigans ensued in the fifth and final inning, with Cranston at the play and representing the game-tying run.
Finch, an Olympic softball gold medalist, appeared to deliver an inside ball to Cranston, though the umpire ruled it a strike and an out. Understandably upset with the call, Cranston kicked dirt on the official and was eventually ejected after throwing a bucket full of gum on him.
All of Team Los Angeles' momentum seemed to dissipate with Cranston's ejection, and a pop-up fly from comedian Guillermo Rodriguez resulted in an easy out and ended any hope of a comeback.
The Miz beat out Brooklyn teammate Pence for the game MVP via fan applause voting. It marks the second MVP for the WWE superstar, who also claimed the award for the 2018 game at Nationals Park in Washington.
One has to wonder if any Dodgers fans in attendance might have been reluctant to root for Pence, who won two World Series with the rival San Francisco Giants.
In all, Saturday's game was a journey of twists, turns, momentum shifts and a fair share of unexpected and truly unique moments.
It wouldn't be a shock if the celebrity game proves to be more entertaining than the All-Star Game itself. Fans who missed out on Saturday should definitely tune in on Monday following the Home-Run Derby for the reair. You're going to enjoy it.
