MLB Trade Rumors: Toronto Blue Jays Would Be Perfect Landing Spot for Matt Garza

Adam WellsDec 29, 2011

There have been a lot of rumors floating around about the future of Matt Garza with the Chicago Cubs. So far, none of them have amounted to much of anything. But according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays have what it takes to get a deal done.

The Cubs are wise to keep the Yankees involved in trade talks, but to me their young pitching isn't strong enough to entice them to make a deal. Manny Banuelos has top-of-the-rotation potential, but his walk rate—71 in 129.2 innings pitched last season—suggests he could end up in the bullpen.

The Yankees don't have any other elite pitching prospects in their system, making it difficult for them to swing a deal without getting a third team involved.

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN, the Blue Jays and Cubs have kept a dialogue going about a potential deal for the 28-year-old.

The Blue Jays have been trying to land an impact starting pitcher all offseason, starting with their failed bid on Yu Darvish, but Garza would not be a bad consolation prize. And the best news of all is that they have the prospects to get a deal done.

It is not a stretch to say that Toronto has the best farm system in baseball. They have a great mix of raw but talented athletes with high ceilings and solid prospects who can be average or better big-league players.

They could build a package around Deck McGuire, a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher who finished 2011 in Double-A. He has the stuff to be a No. 2 starter with a low-90s fastball, a good breaking slider and changeup. He has good command of all his pitches.

It will probably take another high-impact prospect for the Cubs to pull the trigger on a deal, but building a package around McGuire would be a good start for the Blue Jays.

And it would be a wise investment for the Blue Jays, because they are on the verge of challenging Tampa Bay, Boston and the Yankees in the American League East when all their young talent starts graduating to the big league club.

The only thing that they are missing is a No. 2 starter to immediately plug in behind Ricky Romero. Garza would fill that need for them, and the Cubs would get the high-impact talent they need in their system to get back to contention sooner rather than later.
