Kirk Cousins Trade Rumors: Browns Reportedly 'Will Try' to Deal for Redskins QB

Joseph ZuckerMar 14, 2017

The Cleveland Browns are considering a trade for Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported Tuesday.

According to Florio, Cousins may not necessarily be on board with the idea, which wouldn't matter in the end:

"

Another source said that, when Cousins chose to sign his franchise tender last week, the one concern he had is that, after the tender is signed, he can be traded. He specifically was concerned about being traded to Cleveland.

Although it has been reported that Cousins would accept a trade only to the 49ers, his one-year, $23.94 million contract can be traded to the Browns or any other team, if the Browns or any other team is willing to trade for a guy who is under contract for only one year.

The Browns traded for Brock Osweiler earlier in the month, but few expect Osweiler to be Cleveland's starting quarterback in 2017. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported March 9 the team was keeping its options open:

Rapoport also reported the Browns had Jimmy Garoppolo as one of their trade targets. The New England Patriots' asking price had Cleveland going in another direction.

Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot spoke to a source who said the Patriots may be holding out for the No. 1 overall pick in 2017 and a first-rounder in 2018. If that's the case, then the Browns are better off leveraging multiple high draft selections for a more proven quarterback such as Cousins.

The 28-year-old silenced many of his doubters after throwing for 4,917 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2016. He'd arguably be the Browns' best quarterback since their return to the league in 1999.

Cousins' concerns about playing in Cleveland are understandable. In addition to the franchise's inability to develop a quarterback, the team also lost its leading receiver, Terrelle Pryor, who agreed to a one-year deal with Washington.

Since he signed the one-year tender, though, Cousins would have little choice but to make it work should he wind up with the Browns.
